Dodged a bullet, but still sucks

I guess the authentication process works.

I just got an email saying I am getting a refund as a mid-70s PSA 9 HOFer card I tried purchasing did not pass authentication.

I recalled the same card (player/year/grade) selling in mid-April and checked that listing. The PSA Vault was the seller. Sure enough, it was the same cert number, which is now deactivated on the PSA site due to the possibility of a known counterfeit. The seller I was buying from appears to be primarily a buyer/seller of precious metals (gold) with relatively high feedback (greater than 6k).

I may contact Ebay to get a better idea as to whether the card/slab was counterfeit or whether, based on the nature of the seller, they were trying to sell a stolen card (knowingly or unknowingly).

If it's a counterfeit, with the legitimate copy selling several weeks prior, what are the chances of the counterfeit I was inadvertently trying to buy being the only copy? Do counterfeiters do "one offs"? It would seem to me, in for a penny, in for a pound. Which is why I think the original card may have been stolen in transit and pawned.

While the listing I bought from has been pulled, I can see the listing image in my purchases. Although I am not getting as clear of a look gad I access to the original listing, there does seem to be something off with the barcode on the flip compared to the April PSA Vault listing. So, I am more leaning toward counterfeit than stolen.

And I thought authentication process involved no more than making sure the buyer receives the card he or she bid on (certification number check)...

I know that the authentication process takes a bit longer than what we have been used to, but i like it. It has saved me on a couple of occasions. one of which, was on a raw Brady rookie. they actually flagged it and emailed me that it measured short and was trimmed. I didnt know the process went that far.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

It does work. I had a raw Sayers rookie purchase returned after they detected flaws not described in the auction. It took 3 weeks to get a disposition on it, but it saved me a few hundred bucks. I’ve been on both sides. A couple of my consigned raw items have come back after being identified as overgraded or altered.

Hell hath no fury like a Northside slump.

Thanks for that info -- I wasn't sure the Authentication went that far with raw cards. That's great that the process does do that!

Ebay authentication is not always right. A couple years ago I sold a raw 1970 Topps Nolan Ryan. it went through authentication and they said it was altered. I refunded the buyer and sent the card to SGC for grading. It graded a SGC 6.
