    Interesting discussion.

One thought on the “human interaction” aspect: If the concern is that a grader must physically tilt a card to detect certain flaws, it seems AI could theoretically “tilt” the image/light source digitally instead of the card itself and arrive at much the same result.

That said, PSA itself has long acknowledged that grading also contains a subjective component tied to eye appeal and market acceptability. In other words, a technical 7 can sometimes present more like an 8 — and that type of judgment call may ultimately be harder to fully automate.

    From PSA's grading standards section:

“The Importance of Eye Appeal and Subjectivity in Grading”

PSA itself has long acknowledged that while much of grading is objective, there remains a subjective component tied to eye appeal and market acceptability — particularly on cards that fall between two grades. In other words, a technically lesser card can occasionally receive a higher grade based on overall presentation, something that may be difficult to fully automate.

You can’t tilt the light source digitally. Be aware that a camera captures a 3 dimensional projection onto a 2 dimensional surface.
