The question begs:
Why does a high number of nearly every countries population Have some type of stash in a SDB. 
I can underestand jewellery or items needed every once in a while. However most people are not even aware of the contents, or the approximate value of whawt they have "secretly" stashed away.
One answer I hear frequently : Oh, that is for the GrandKids....

I think there are two main reasons why the average person might have a SDB.
First, it is a safe dedicated location for all of a person's important documents and irreplaceable stuff. This is a very compelling reason.
Second, it is perceived as the safest place to store things. This reason is less compelling, especially these days. Bank branches close, there are access issues if the owner passed away, etc.
