What is holding this 1922 Peace Dollar back from MS66+ or MS67?

In my Johnny Cochran voice, “If the grade doesn’t fit, you must resubmit.” I’m not a fan of the discoloration. Maybe an acetone bath or a little conservation would help. I agree with @Catbert about the eagle’s wings; however, I have seen plenty of obscured scratches on coins that straight graded and stickered. If worst comes to worse submit it around the holidays and hope the graders have had too much eggnog at the Christmas party. 🤣

Sometimes it takes multiple tries to get it where you want it.

If experts and that might include you (I don’t know who you are) think the coin is undergraded someone will eventually get it upgraded and hopefully that will be you. Like I said before I can’t tell the difference between a 66, 66+, or 67.

This is my 1922 in MS66+ CAC

Yours has a few more friction marks on the highest reverse devices, and probably more luster. How they weigh those factors in deciding on a grade is beyond me.

I will say that trying to grade Peace dollars is much more challenging than Morgan dollars.

You aren’t going to see “friction” on MS66 graded coins from a major TPG…

    Cracked a fatty CAC. Oofta.

Keep trying until you get the result you want…

This. I had a 1920 64 CAC Saint that I thought was a slam-dunk 64+. Tried twice for an upgrade then sold it for a premium price for a 64. Of course it subsequently upgraded to 64+ by the new owner.
