1968 Ryan rookie. PSA vs SGC
I saw last night that Heritage sold an SGC 9 Ryan rookie. Card went for $100,650.00
Heritage sold a PSA 9 Ryan rookie last month on March 1 for $115,900.00
I was surprised the cards sold only $15k apart. A couple of questions/observations: are SGC values starting to compare favorably to PSA, at least when it comes to vintage? Could this be, in part, to the PSA acquisition of SGC?
The Ryan market continues to be really strong. I wonder how high this card can reach. Ryan must be the most collected vintage pitcher.

I'm not sure if the buyer that can afford $100k is chasing a registry fix or just wants a highly graded card from a reputable company.
If an SGC card presents as it has been graded then there’s no reason values shouldn’t exist on a parallel. You’ve offered a singular example of comparison. It does not predicate the market. Each high grade Ryan rookie card will have its own “best” presentation, be it corners, surface, color, focus, print, or all of the above. That’s where values are considered. The likelihood of ANY high grade Ryan rookie rising in value is rather easy to predict.
Hell hath no fury like a Northside slump.
i have sold many SGC "record breakers" for the grade, but at very low levels. Most are under $100 or so. They sell well but it takes a little longer to sell because most people search for PSA. I'm guilty of that as well.
The SGC holder really spotslight a nice centered card. They look much better than the PSA holders. I have wondered myself why i can sell a psa 7.5 munson for a record amount, but when we get to nice 9's and 10's people want to pay far more for a lesser looking pSA card than a rellly nice SGC for the same grade.
Both grade really hard, sgc gives you a little bit more for the centering than PSA. And centering is what all the big collectors want.
I don't complain about grades since it can go either way.
63F Drysdales are tough to find centered - I picked this one up and crossed it - min grade 8 and it got sent back not in a holder.
I didn't look at it with a 5X even. And after the fact, I noticed this corner and no way I would give it an 8 either.
My reaction? Nothing. It's just the price of doing business in our hobby.
If a dealer has two cards the same grade one PSA and One SGC I will pick the card I think is better and would pay more for it. Not sure if that is the case on the Ryan cards but I couldn’t care less which slab it is in.
