How does this work, exactly?

I received an email from USMint this morning telling me the quarter bags and roll would be available at 12:00 noon today ET. When I went to check the pricing it says Backordered. If you can't order till noon today how can it be backordered. Don't get me wrong, I have never ordered from Mint with a time opening , only off their website. A little education please.

Backordered means they aren't immediately shipping. They sometimes use pre-order but only if they aren't shipping any until a future date, usually because they haven't been struck yet. Why they chose backorder over pre-sale in this case, i don't know. Maybe because they are struck and shipping to banks.
