SOLD: 1797 1/2C LOW HEAD PLAIN EDGE AG03 PCGS CAC

CAC Pop 1 and 4 Finer in all Grades! This 1797 Liberty Cap Half Cent, Plain Edge, is attributed to the Cohen-3a “Low Head” variety—one of several Plain Edge subtypes from this final year of issue for the Liberty Cap design. Designated Type 3 with the distinctive small, right-facing portrait, this variety is far scarcer than commonly encountered examples and is estimated to survive in only ~100 pieces across all grades. Certified PCGS AG03 and CAC-approved, this piece is notably original for its low-ball grade, with smooth, problem-free surfaces and attractive, natural chocolate-brown toning accented by soft olive undertones. The obverse retains a clearly legible date and partial LIBERTY inscription, while Liberty’s silhouette and cap remain discernible despite considerable circulation wear. The reverse is even more heavily worn, with only faint traces of the wreath and bow visible under angled light, yet the coin shows no signs of corrosion, verdigris, or rim damage.

Nice looking for an AG. Decent surfaces, too.

Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
