How to appraise a Cassius Clay and Muhammad Ali autographs

My brother and I attended a sports collectible show at the LAX Airport Hilton back in October 1992. Several major sports stars were signing at this show. Muhammad Ali and Roy Campenella were just a couple of the many celebrity athletes. We had three autograph tickets for Mohammad Ali, and the promoters were strict about asking only for Ali autographs or risk being removed from the show. So we got three boxing gloves and had the first two autographed Muhammad Ali. We waited until he was near the end of his signing time and got in line for the 3rd autograph, at we asked him to sign it Cassius Clay, which he did without missing a beat. We got all three autographs notarized while we were at the show. Now we like to know what they are worth for insurance purposes.

Your story is perfectly believable (although I'd be interested in what the arrangement was with Roy Campanella autographs), and the signatures look good, but those COAs won't get you too far if you ever went to sell them. They don't show a photo of the signed items, for example, so they could easily be switched out and paired with fake items.

In any case, you should check places like RR Auction for results for similar items to get an idea of value.

I see lots of sold Ali gloves on RR Auction.

Yours is an older/nicer signature so I'd use those types as comparables. Value seems to be several hundred to a little over a thousand dollars.

The Clay signature is far rarer, I'm sure.
