Long Beach Expo—- Are you going?

I’m planning on making a quick trip to Long Beach for the show on February 18th. Stacks Bowers is going to have lot viewing for their Spring showcase auction on March 10th. They’ve got a 1943- s Lincoln cent struck in bronze and a 1944 Lincoln struck on a zinc planchet. Out of my price range but fun to see in hand.
I’m happy that Stacks acquired the show so that it can continue its 60+ years of existence.

Yes - 1/2 day Wed, all day Thu & 1/2 day Fri. Last year I thought this show wouldn’t be revived; thanks to SB it still is in a bit of a different format.

I'll be there -- likely at least Wednesday for early bird and Thursday for the full day. Have missed the LB show but excited to see it under the SB banner.

Usually it’d be too far for me since I call Michigan my home. However, I’m in Tucson for a month and that makes it easy.

How was day 1 of the Long Beach show?

  • bigjpstbigjpst Posts: 3,220 ✭✭✭✭✭

Drove in this morning. Decent show with a pretty large crowd. Definitely some new show confusion. Signage pointing to locked doors. I was directed by convention center staff to walk around the building in the rain to the exhibitor entrance. With no badge of course. Fortunately, security walked me through the building to the front, where the people working the front were a bit less than informed. Inside was bustling and I was able to buy quite a bit of inventory.

I haven't been to Long beach for a show since 2018 or 2019. I was pleasantly surprised with the show.

Glad to see you back. Did you pair up with Michael this time? I haven't been to LB is, what, 3 years. I couldn't make it this time though.

Is there going to be a show in June or Sept?

That's probably a good idea to go to a twice a year set up. Some had suggested that years ago when the June show was usually dead....

I went there today, the lines to get in were short, and it wasn’t dead, but wasn’t crowded. I bought several large cents from Pierre Fricke for my Custom made album that The _Dinosaur_Man made. I also bought a circulated 17-D Walker for my Wayte Raymond Album. That’s all I picked up, but I did sell a couple raw so-called dollars to The So-Called Dollar guy. Mrs_Spud came with me, we got in at 10:00 and had checked out the whole bourse and left at 1:00, including stopping for lunch which was a personal pizza at the concession stand. It was a nice day overall.

I was there Wednesday. There were lots of people online to enter around 10:30. Show overall wasn’t crowded but not empty. Line at PCGS was on the long side. There weren’t too many national dealers and quite a few local “dealers”. Show probably had 150 tables. SB had auction viewing in a private area which was nice with decent lighting. Overall a nice way to spend half a day.

I only bought three Justin Herbert rookie cards and a Jaxon Dart rookie card. Maybe five percent of dealers were selling mostly cards but dealers selling cards also had to be selling coins. Didn’t see anything coin wise in my price range that was intriguing.

REALLY glad I went on Thursday despite the weather.

Very bad wind & rain almost my entire 70-mile 2-hour freeway drive. I arrived at 2pm just as the weather started to clear.

No crowds. No line to get in. Light floor traffic. Little or no waiting to buy & sell, view auction lots, etc etc.

Saw everything I wanted in just a few hours.

    I loved it!

Good to hear from you. I didn’t have a table. I did get to spend some time catching up with Mike though. He had a table up front. The ceiling was leaking onto his table the whole time I was there. So much for prime location.

As a background, I’ve always loved this show. I recall it being one of the “majors” with 3 annual events to a pretty much regional show last year with only a February event.
SB is the new operator & as others have said, also plans a September show at least for this year. One change they’ve made that bears mention is a Tuesday-Friday format. Of course, that’s a departure from the more common Wednesday-Saturday iterations. Opinions here were mixed; some liked it while others thought the “casual” collector or M-F worker would be hurt by this change. Personally, I feel it was worth trying & am OK with either format.
For a show like this, I normally do a lot of buying beforehand & pickup the coins after I see them & approve of them in hand. Naturally, that means interaction with sellers I’m familiar with.
Still, it’s worthwhile walking the bourse; in this show I met a few dealers I hope to do future business with.
The show seemed to have good activity & a positive buzz. The layout was familiar with table space less than previously due to the space reserved for the auction lot viewing area. My opinion there is favorable; I did like that setup & it seemed to work well for others I talked to.
Conclusion: I hope this show survives & even thrives. SB seems to be dedicated to making this work & is bound to make it even better in the future.

I already wrote too much in the "Laura" post thread. But it was a good show from the dealer side of the table. No sales on setup day, but as expected for me. Very busy Wednesday, and still busy to fluctuating degrees on Thursday and Friday. Great conversations. I bought nothing. But manning my booth alone afforded me little time to browse the bourse anyway. I did a couple laps but only really stopped at a few tables.

Unlike most dealers, I actually was looking for some big bags of 90% (apart from really rare suff too). Not much. I saw some at Country Bear on setup day, but wanted the public to be served first. Went back Friday and the bags were gone, just a couple of dime bags at maybe $1 face.

Caught up with Charmy and the crew this show. Hadn't had the opportunity in a while for this reason or that. It was very pleasant. The dealer reception by the host on Thursday was quite nice. The old setup day taquito buffets were nice too, but inelegant.

Saw one major pick from the show, but I am not at the liberty to disclose it. It was raw and got show-graded.
