1972 Topps Willy Mays PSA 9

My best buddy is trying to find a solid/high end 1972 Willy Mays in PSA 9. I think this is the cheapest PSA 9 Topps Mays card and can usually be purchased for under $1,300. Some of the ones for sale on EBAY look horrible to me. Do any of you think these are legit PSA 9's that you would be happy buying if you were in the market for this card? The third card listed has ample black marks on the card.

I would buy card #3. I prefer the color and clarity of the image.

Card #2 is a close second....the color and sharpness looks a bit off to me (maybe sun faded or just a poor photograph).

Card #1 has some right edge/chipping issues. No go.

i can not believe that card number one is a nine. that edge and top corner are awful.

All 3 examples were graded in the distant past. Current PSA standards within the past couple years would potentially take down the first 2 examples to NM-MT 8, while the 3rd example might still carry the 9, but it has those black smudges, so....

Looking for a knockout 9 is going to be tough in this market.

    I like #3 best.

$1500 or more will earn a very fine example of this card, #3. There's a few on eBay which match that price level and presentation. At $1300 or less you would have been a buyer in 2025. The first 2 examples above are being offered in the lower range, 1300-1325. They don't look nearly as good as those which sold in that price range last year. Both have faded black ink in the word GIANTS above Willie's head. Wouldn't touch 'em for that money. They ain't 9's IMO.

I don't think any would garner a 9 nowadays. The 3rd is the cleanest, yet the smudges on the top do it in.

I think for most submitters today; top is 7-8, middle is 8, bottom is 7-8 depending on how hard they hammer the smudges

I think this is an overly broad statement. I see many examples of over graded cards in current generation holders. Generally speaking, PSA is grading more strictly today but it all depends on the grader and their frame of mind on the day they grade it.
