Mint Set Missing Mint Mark

Someone asked me about this and I was curious, they purchased multiple Denver mint sets and three of the mint sets the nickel didn’t have the D mint mark. They are all 1971-D Mint sets.

I know the 1971 Proof sets can have the error on the nickel without the mint mark but not sure if this is a similar thing.

Anyone seen this before?

Is that packet from the Philly mint? Half of it anyway

I'd be interested in seeing all three to see if they look like P's or D's but this is most probably a packaging error.

Some such errors are common like '69 quarters in the wrong package. I don't remember seeing this one in the '71 set.

All the other coins have the D mint mark, the nickel was the only one with no mint mark for all three.

I saw the other coins and they definitely have the D mint mark, was super weird, I couldn't find anything else for '71 other than the proof error

I meant the three that were is red packets with philly mm's. There is a distinct difference in appearance (on average) between the Denver and Philly nickels for 1971. If the three with no mm's look like Denvers then it would suggest that they really are no-mm '71-D's.

It's entirely possible that the Denver mint created mintmarkless coins frequently and it is unknown. The only way to catch it is to find them still in the bag but very few bags were checked. People ignored clads so today all we have are the mint sets.

For our reference, enlarging the third photo shows the set on the left side is comprised of otherwise-Denver coins less the nickel. I really cannot tell about the right packet.

I wouldn't have taken them out of the package.
