What is this?

I'm trying to learn how to recognize different types of minting errors. What is this? It's an ugly 1953 penny but I'm curious what's under the 5 there? Nothing else on it looks out of the ordinary. Is it just a weird die chip? Can't seem to find anything similar online.

    Please do not use screen shots, they are too pixilated to see fine detail.
    Hard to tell from that photo but it may be damage, it may be a die chip,
    In either case it is not an error.

    I've read the Red Book and most of the guides on variety Vista. I'll take a look at the list.
