1985 Topps Baseball Wax box question.

Yankees70Yankees70 Posts: 1,051 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have noticed there's 1985 BBCE Topps baseball wax packs in 1981 boxes for sale on EBAY (Complete Wax Box BBCE certified). Are these harder to find and more expensive or harder to find but less expensive? Or are the prices similar?

Was this an anomaly for Topps between the years 1981-1985 or was different boxes being used for most or all of these years?

__A 1985 Topps Baseball 36-count wax box, even if housed inside a 1981 Topps display box, is generally worth between $500 and $800, with certified, sealed, and, if applicable, "Factory Authorized" (FASC) boxes reaching the higher end of that range. These boxes are valued for potential high-grade rookie cards of Mark McGwire, Roger Clemens, and Kirby Puckett.

Value Range: Recent listings and sales for 1985 Topps wax boxes (36 packs) generally fall within the $516 to $799.99 range.

Authentication: Boxes certified by Baseball Card Exchange (BBCE) as sealed and authentic generally command higher, more consistent prices.

"1981 Box" Context: The 1981 box is simply the container used for the 1985 packs; the value is based entirely on the 1985 content.__

Thank you. I have googled lots of things that are not correct which is why I was asking for opinions. Does your experience in unopened material match what google is claiming? Are you saying that a BBCE FASC 85 Wax box would go for the same amount as the 85 wax box in a 1981 box?

Topps also used 1982 boxes for 1985 packs as well. I guess there was a shortage of 85 boxes that year. :D

The 1985 Topps packs that were packed out in 1981 boxes are harder to find. However, they typically sell for a little less since unopened collectors desire the correct packaging for display purposes.

Personally I value the 1981 or 1982 outer boxes less than the original.

Jordangretzkyfan is right....I like the regular packaging without black lines or price stickers or writing.

Years ago, BBCE had a case of 1984 wax packs in the 1982 box. I think Topps used leftover stock from the early-80s to package some of their mid-80s product.

They also had 1981 football in 1979 outer boxes too

I have also seen 1976 baseball cards in 75 wrappers... for individual packs, psa has graded several of these.

Topps has a long issue of frugality and reusing wrappers/boxes/packaging in subsequent years.

I think I have seen some issues where they made the boxes inside out for things like 1980 Mrs Butterworth boxes.

When I go to the National - a few times we had a rip at the BBCE booth.

The last year I was there, we were going to have an 85T but didn't do it. I'm going to have to check - I think it's in an 82T box?

I just checked and for the record, I have an 85T wax box in an 82T printed box.

I for one am a huge fan of these packaging variations and collect them all. When I first got into collecting unopened in 2011/2012 the 81 version was definitely a premium vs the standard. I didn’t discover 82 until some time later (I think someone gave it to me as a CU Secret Santa). I will find pics of my boxes. What’s cool is that you can get the 81 and 82 versions FASC here and there.

John - now that is one sweet run of boxes. Makes me appreciate the variations much more now that I see your stash. Thanks for sharing!

    Thanks Chris!

1985 has become my favorite Topps set of the 80s. 83 is close second. So as an unopened guy focused on 80s all the packaging variations are great.

The ripping itch got the better of my sons and me a couple years ago. We bought and opened an 81 variation. Hit all the bigs and graded the Mac and got an 8. So much fun.

@NJ80sBBC John, that is a great collection of boxes, thanks for showing us. I count 9 of the 1985 boxes, with 5 in the 1981 display and 4 in the 1982 display.

Not gonna lie, the first thing I noticed in your photo was the turtle! I think you should add a 1989 TMNT box in honor of the turtle!

    Thanks!!

LMAO! Didn’t realize Shelly the Tortoise was hanging out that day!

I do appreciate the normal 85 box too. And hoarded them!
