Two Thumbs Up to Great Collections

I had my first submission to Great Collections, sending them eight coins during the last few days of 2025. They were sold in the auction that closed last Sunday the 18th. I was really please with what the coins realized. The proceeds were deposited in my bank account on Friday -- five days later! Incredible. Needless to say, I will be using them again and I give them a two-thumbs-up recommendation.

Sold my first coins on GC on Sunday and the proceeds hit my bank account today (5 days later).

Nice to see there's an auction house who doesn't view the float as a profit center.

Definitely a first class operation from A-Z for both consignors and bidders.

Ian and his crew have built a heck of a business from the ground up by working extremely hard and doing right by people. He deserves the credit and recognition he’s received in recent years. As long as he and his current crew are in place, GC has my business.

(As an aside…..I would guess he has to be getting his door beaten down by the private equity guys at this point. This gives me nightmares.)

and their website and its querying capabilities are top notch.

I agree with 2 thumbs up for Ian. I've particioated in over 12 auctions with him and have nothing but praise for his company. But it is odd how 2 different auctions one week apart can vary so much in payment times. I just finished 2 auctions one on 2012026 which stated to be paid on 3032026, seems longer than usual, but iiwii.
Another closed on 2082026 which stated to be paid on 3102026, but then paid within a week already. Not in a hurry, but just seems odd.

After my first positive experience, I consigned my second group of coins with them recently. I am confident that I will be as pleased with this consignment as I was with my first. GC is an excellent company to do business with.

I use their standard first-class ground shipping and have been astonished on how quickly my auction winnings get to me.

I'm on the GC website every Sunday evening bidding - they are fantastic with taking care of any problems that may arise during the entire transaction.

Great Collections have been really good to me. They have sold over 1000 coins for me with no problems. You can send them raw coins and they take care of sending them to be graded and get them listed for auction. It's an easy process.
I really like their submission form. You check a few boxes and list the coins and they do the rest.

My second batch of 10 coins to Great Collections closed February 15th. After deducting listing and seller's fees, I will still receive over Redbook retail for these coins. I was delighted to see my picked WB-2 1855/54 hammer for $455 ($500.50 w/ BP). GC is a terrific service for the coin community.

Are GC's rates for grading coins lower than if the consigner were to submit their coins themselves to the TPGs?

Whenever I notice a typo in a listing or want a Great Photo of a coin without one, I email Raeleen and she is on it so fast that it is amazing. I've sold dozens and bought hundreds of coins through GC and always been very happy with every aspect of the transaction.

It depends on the service level. Where I save is on the postage. Register insured cost is pretty high. I just sent 16 coins insured and it cost me $46. With raw coins I would have had to pay postage to and from PCGS and turn around and pay postage again to Great Collections.

I looked into using private insurance but that's more geared around those that are shipping a lot of packages.

Where did you check for private insurance? My first policy was a collector policy through Hugh Wood (now risk strategies) which is partnered with the ANA. I have a dealer policy now, which is more expensive for frequent shipping with higher coverages, but my original policy was specifically not for frequent shipping. Just coverage at home, SDB, traveling between those locations, and when occasionally shipping. You can designate limits on everything, but if I remember correctly my original yearly premium was a bit more than half of a percent of the total insured value. Perhaps it has gone up, but even at 1% of the insured value, you'd still come out ahead when factoring in usps insurance costs, which is basically a donation anyway since you'll have to fight tooth and nail to get paid out properly on a claim.

Another good option is below, ship and insure. Their rates give you an idea of the risk profile of each carrier and service. I used their rate calculator with v 50k coverage via Fedex overnight and it was $90, which is about what you'd pay Fedex for that label with no insurance at all, so it looks like a great value. Make sure you follow all the instructions, but they are identical to privater insurer instructions anyway.

I'm using Hugh Wood to insure only what I have at home. I talked with them about moving over to a dealer policy but it was better for me to stay with what I have. I was also told that if I moved over to the dealer policy there was no going back.
