Chain Cents
If you had to estimate how many straight graded Chain cents are currently in a PCGS holder?
I believe the pops are inflated with resubmissions.
My opinion is that a straight graded Chain cent is quite rare especially if we exclude grades below VG.

I think most $25K 200+ yr old coins are rare. In a most remarkable purchase that I would have to obtain one of these coins, it most certainly would not be a straight graded coin of any grade. I would I have to hope a get a details coin with a readable date. So yes I agree with your rarity assessment.

I always wanted a chain cent, but I long doubted that I’d ever find one that I could afford, and that would also meet my criteria for purchase. Every chain I saw was either nice but way out of my price range, or scudzy and I just couldn’t pull the trigger. That is, until I stumbled on this on Pierre Fricke’s website. PCGS-6 and CAC green, and honestly it’s not a site I tended to visit. Good fortune was on my side that day, and I snapped it up. Absolutely my favorite early federal issue.

You have to have one of the nicest lower grade Chains in existence. Period! Congratulations!

Thanks Dave! I don’t know about that claim, but it’s a special coin and I’m happy with it. Somewhat ironic too as I’m not a large cent guy, I own only three LCs, but the chain issue is just iconic. I’d also add that one of those three is an outstanding lower grade and CACd 1799, speaking of iconic… both keepers!
