My current NFL pet peeve

It's all the NFL players having Jr, II, III, IV, and Sr on their jersey after their surname.
Back in the day, Ken Griffey Jr roamed the outfield with his dad. The Jr part made sense. Same with Cal Ripken Jr and Sr.
This current football trend is really dumb. I can see if your dad had the same name and played in the NFL (ie Kellen Winslow II). But nobody is going to mistake, say, Byron Murphy Jr of the Vikings with his school teacher dad.
Even dumber is the 'Sr' thing. Nobody is going to confuse you with your two year old toddler. Just give us your last name.
That is all - getting off the soap box now :D

Its really not about confusion though, its just your legal name. Im a Jr and all my jerseys., IDs, passport etc say it because its my actual name.

I will agree though naming your child the II instead of JR is kind of weird

I'm in agreement here and would like to suggest that every team wears a different jersey for every game, never using the same one twice.

If I was an NFL player I’d have my name legally changed to L’Marcouse Harpenthrash-Crassmanowitz Jr, just to annoy my Dad.

In general, jr. and other suffixes are not considered part of your surname. According to the Social Security Administration, "suffix is not considered part of the legal name by SSA".

You guys need to back off a little unless you don’t really love your Father, Grandfather, etc. because that’s all it is. The use of the same name in many families is a long tradition and using suffix of Jr, III, IV, etc. is a legal distinction but more importantly a sign of respect for one’s family and father.

To my thinking, it seems like an awful petty thing to be aggravated about, but that’s just me.

I agree with OP. it is pretty stupid.

@Maywood I dont think anyone is "aggravated" about it, it is just a pet peeve. just like the OP said.

I also agree that the griffeys, ripkens and james could have "jr." on their jerseys to avoid confusion as they were/are on the same team. but even then, it is really not necessary as the numbers are different. I dont think there was any suffix on Billy Ripkens jersey when there were 3 Ripkens on the field for baltimore in 1988/89. the simple number differences were plenty.

the name thing doesnt bother me, but if I never see another d-back catch an uncontested 4th down throw instead of knocking it down and costing his team 30-40 yards of field position in the process, it'll be too soon

idk who it was, but an idiot Packer did that last weekend, then he got up and acted like he was just named first-team all-pro

Really guys, the lamest thing about pro football these days is a bunch of defensive players collaborate on a 4th down stop near the goal line, then they all run 100 yards to the other end zone, fold their arms, point at fans and do some kinda celebration choreographed by schoolchildren. Then they hoot, holler and run up and down the sideline slapping helmets. Adrenaline. Heh heh. 😏

You won't get that complaint from me since Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has to be one of the all time great football names. :D

Icouldnt agree more! i was watching that play when it happened and was wondering why that idiot thought what he did was so great when what he actually did was lose 40 yards of field position
