Interesting Item Seen at FUN Yesterday
Hard to pick any one thing that truly stands out at a major show like this, where every dealer is showing their best items, but this one stands out.
It’s an “original” half roll of 1880CC Morgan dollars.
I put original in quotes for those who like to debate the semantics of what that is….
Anyway, a customer was examining it at David Kahn’s table, which was shoulder to shoulder and two deep, but they graciously allowed me to take a few photos while they discussed price. Apparently it sold via Heritage some time ago, and was being offered for ~$2k less. The backstory is in the Heritage archives.

Wow, don't see that everyday, excluding the bogus ones on EBAY. Any Bank on the wrapper.
The fellow interested in it mentioned he liked that you could see Carson City still lightly printed on it.
thats sexy
11.5$ Southern Dollars, The little “Big Easy” set
a unsearched roll with an $20 gold on one end and a 1795 dollar on the other?
That is pretty cool if legit. I don't trust anything anymore though.

There is no backstory said by Heritage. I have a hard time believing this as genuine. A half roll of 1880-CC dollars? Sounds way too good to be true for the collector market.
Does anyone have evidence that these existed in the first place? I'm playing the sceptic here.

I call bogus. This exact roll sold on Ebay February 2016 for $1,325, six months before it sold at Heritage for $14,100. The coins are hairlined on both sides. Unfortunately Heritage may have unopened a can of worms with their "original" claims.

Worthpoint recently changed Ebay source names from "Ebay" to "Online Marketplace," probably for advertising/political reasons.

If the buyer opened and only the top and bottom were CC coins, would they have any recourse with Heritage?
Depends on what you mean by "original". It's definitely an old roll.
All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.
Buyer beware on that for sure, but I think Heritage was appropriately measured in the description.
Sexy is a good word to use for that auction item.
And the top coin could be an 1880P I suppose….
Was Kahn conned? Did Heritage overhype and under research it? Could be, but I’m more trusting and less skeptical of those folks and their expertise and resources.
But will we ever know unless someone boldly cracks it open?
CARSON CITY SAVINGS BANK
is on the wrapper - see the links above.
Thanks, so that bank (name) existed from 1875 to 1882 before changing to Bullion & Exchange Bank, so either someone did their research if phony, or it could be legit. Not that other dates/mintages are inside. Bank opened to support the opening of the CC Mint a few years earlier.
If I bought that I dont think I could control myself. I would have to open it.
However at $14,000.00 I would never own it.

David Kahn was asking $12k at the show, but I agree, cool to see, but not something I’d personally sink real money into.
I would never trust that to be fully original, especially, in this day and age. Even if it was, they could be MS 60-62 coins. I also don’t think it’s worth $14,000. Or even $12000 like Kahn was asking. Another minor detail is that the end coin looks much too terminal. It’s a cool story and fun to look at, but I would definitely pass at that price. Unless you open the roll, you’ll always be wondering what lurks in the middle.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍
