Selections from The Black Cat Collection

Now that I’ve taken an all-CAC U.S. Type Set about as far as currently possible, I find myself in
a moment of reflection—one that invites both celebration and renewal.
Building that set was a pursuit driven by passion, patience, and an unwavering commitment to
quality. Along the way, the friendships formed, the knowledge gained, and the thrill of discovery
proved as meaningful as the coins themselves.
Having achieved that long-held goal, I feel drawn back to the areas that have always sparked the
greatest personal interest: Trade Dollars, Twenty Cent pieces, Patterns, and select early U.S.
coins. These are the series that have captured my imagination from the beginning—rich in
history, artistry, and mystery. They represent chapters of American numismatics that continue to
inspire my curiosity and fuel my desire to build something lasting.
This means that I will be paring back a bit. Collecting is, after all, an evolution. I have consigned
a small group to the upcoming Heritage FUN sale, with more to follow in the coming year. A list
of “Selections from The Black Cat Collection” can be seen here.

I hope those who acquire coins from this portion of the Black Cat Collection will enjoy them as
much as I have. May they bring you the same sense of excitement, connection, and wonder that
has guided my pursuit from the beginning—and will surely guide it in the years ahead.
Joe O’Connor is available to answer any questions. He will be available at FUN table 406.

Beautiful coins! Good luck with the auction.
As a Type Set collector, often ranked in the Registries not too far below you and D.L. Hansen, I have greatly admired your collection for many years! I share your joy for you that you have described in your OP, and wish you the very best, both with your upcoming sales, and also with your upcoming collecting ventures!
I’ll be stopping by Joe’s booth both Thursday and Friday next week. Will you be at FUN? If so, I’d love to meet you, if only for a few minutes.

I’ve walked away from many dozens of collecting projects over the years. I regret a few of them, but have no doubt that the constant refocusing has made me a better collector, and made the entire endeavor more enjoyable and more profitable. I hope it works out similarly for you!
