top coin is MS 68 and bottom is MS 68+ CAC green, both sold recently on GC with about $40,000 price difference.
Population is 25 in 68 and 3 in 68+

You’re not asking any question, but I’ll chime in that 40 large is nuts. That 68+ sure is pretty, however.
I’d gladly take the 68 and a decent chain cent instead.

I love the 68 as well. Both are good coin 🪙
People with no budget like having the "best." So they pay for it, because they can. Top pop for lots of coins is orders of magnitude more expensive than the next step down.
It is SAD that this “ hobby of kings “ has come to this ! How many rolls of these still exist ?
Heck, there’s not even a mint mark ! Just plain silliness.
This is one of the great things about collecting coins; I have no interest in paying prices like this for these coins, but someone else might, and it doesn't matter to me at all.

That sweet toning earned the +
While I share your eye-rolls for this phenomenon, I don't agree that it is sad (much less SAD
).
I don't care how much people pay for valuable top pop coins, since I am never in the hunt for such unicorns. I have no problem with wealthy people geting the fun of the chase, just like I get the fun of the chase (finding a coin I like for a price I'm willing to pay), and it sometimes makes amusing spectator sport.
Your 40K is someone else's $400.00

Paying that kind of money for a common date Lincoln cent makes no sense. I don't care how high it is graded or what sticker it has.
To each his own.
Some people like 18 year old single malt scotch while others like Johnie Walker red label.
Some people drink two buck chuck and others drink Opus.
Warren Buffet drives a 25 year old car and some people who can’t rub two nickels together drive a BMW 700 series.

Amazing. I need to find one of those to get slabbed.
I could use the money.

Every one of us believes that grading has a subjective component to it , we've seen lots of MS65's turn into 66's
How do you suspend disbelief long enough to pay 40K for a half point upgrade on a slab ?

The 68 has great metal flow lines plus that lovely die crack and the toned 68+ has a lot of die file lines that look pretty cool. But yeah, the 68+ price is strong somebody wanted a point or the toning, or both.
If it was my coin, I would have asked for Phil to take a Great Photo at least. Those can really attract more attention.
Honestly I'm a fan of either coin, to each his own.

To each their own. There are literally 1000’s of Gem Unc’s known of this date.
Both are beautiful coins! However—and it may be that I am not discerning enough—among the 750 or so graded 67/67+, I could certainly find a few that I personally would be equally happy with.
or registry points. Probably one of those.
