New Purchases: French Ecu types

Spending time on my World Coins in early America set has been a lot of fun and certainly furthered my enjoyment of the hobby.

The French Ecu requirement has had me looking at a ton of them the past couple of months. Thought I’d share a few recent pickups. Funny enough not a single one of these is actually eligible for inclusion in the set, but I never would’ve added them to my collection if I wasn’t looking at a ton of Ecus. All of these are PCGS top pops, but I don’t put much weight into that tbh.

  1. 1695/4 Ecu (over struck) Do not have in hand yet but very excited to study. I’ve also been working on Brazilian 960 Reis and that’s obviously had me looking at lots of coins struck over other coins for really the first time in my collecting life. I’m kinda getting into them.

XF 45

  1. 1648 A 1/2 Ecu AU 58. My type of eye appeal

  2. 1655 I 1/2 Ecu AU 55. Ditto.

  3. 1644 A 1/12 Ecu AU 55. What can I say….Im a sucker for color. The first step is admitting you have a problem….or so I’m told.

I’m certain many here have more expertise regarding these than I do…..please feel free to add any info, opinions, your own Ecu examples, etc.

I had this 1/10 ecu that u really liked: slight doubling, overdate, and a duck for a mint mark!

But then I traded up for a full Ecu. Overstruck for sure. True View is ok - really emphasizes the rub which is not there in hand and minimizes the luster. I doubt this coin circulated.

Certainly hard to find ones that don’t have a ton of adjustment marks, aren’t cleaned, etc.

Edited to add: nice coins @MEJ7070 !
