Sunday, December 14 - Melville, Long Island NY Show Report

Well, it’s been quite the weekend! If you’re in the Melville, Long Island area, you know we got hit with a lot more snow than anyone was expecting. Earlier in the week, I had warned Frank (the show promoter and heck of a hard working guy) that the snow forecast had shifted from 1-2 inches to a potential 3-6 inches. Frank’s response? “The show must go on!” Not exactly, but you get the gist. Fast forward to Sunday morning, and we’re all packed up and ready to hit the road.

Typically, around this time of year, we do something special at Scarsdale Coin. Instead of the usual inventory of slabbed CAC coins, we clear out our back stock, slashing prices by 50% to 80% off the eBay comparables.

It’s our way of giving back to our loyal customers during the holidays. So, Saturday morning, 4:30 AM, we hit the road. Normally, we’d have an hour drive to Melville, but with the snow and the forecast, we decided to give ourselves 1.5 to 2 hours.

We started by picking up everything from the warehouse. By 5:30 AM, we were on the road, and I’ll admit, I started having second thoughts. There were already 4-5 inches of snow on the ground, and no plows in sight. But the show website still said, “THE SHOW IS ON.” So we pressed forward.

We arrived in Melville, safe and sound, but we were among the first ones there. Only 3 or 4 dealers had shown up at that point, and I couldn't help but think, “I hope more people show up.” But one dealer, who I know well, had a great attitude about the situation: “Fewer dealers means more customers for us!” Now, that’s the kind of mindset I like.

Since we had so much stuff, we’d doubled our table space for the day. I’m talking huge boxes of 2x2 holders for $20, crates of canvas bank bags for $10

—seriously good stuff. One guy even got a grab bag of Disney items from a dealer he works with. It was all about good vibes and karma. Did the crowds show up? Not exactly as packed as usual, but people did show up, and we sold, sold, sold! Everything from movie money $100 bills to Atchocha coins and, of course, SILVER and GOLD. We sold almost everything we had—well, except for six 1/2 oz pieces. But we did sell several hundred ounces of silver!

Melville is always a quirky show. It runs every other week, but we try to make it out there every couple of months. It’s a smaller show, but the vibe is always great. We’re already looking forward to next time.
Next week, we’ll be heading down to Langhorne, PA for the "Sesame Street Show" near Sesame Place at the Sheraton. It’s another smaller show, but one of my favorites. It’s run by Bob Paul, a rare coin dealer I’m proud to call a friend, along with his son, Adam. They’re some of the best in the business, and if you haven’t checked them out yet, you should. After that, we’re off to Florida for a month of shows, culminating in the big FUN show.

We hope to see you at one of our upcoming shows. From all of us at Scarsdale Coin—Brandon, Stephanie, Brittany, Lisa, Joe, and myself—we wish you all a very happy holiday season!

Always enjoy your reports. The more detailed the better. No worry on length of the report. Full of positive vibes. If I resided closer would stop at your show/table.

So cool. Congratulations on a terrific attitude. It's be sweet if a few more dealers had your temperament.
Would you ever consider listing a few of those coins on the Sell forum here?

    Jon,

I didn't find it "long" as all.
    Was a good read.
Also, cool what you do to blow things out instead of continuing to sit on it.

And, glad you made it there, and back, safely

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
