Walking Liberty Pocket Piece - San Francisco
Around 20 years ago my son found this Walking Liberty half dollar pocket piece laying in the grass at our high school football field. It was obviously carried for many years as the date is gone but the San Francisco mint mark is still legible. I don't suppose there are any "tells" that would make it possible to identify the year of mintage on a coin this worn.

I wish I could say for certain that I am seeing a 7 (it looks like maybe 1927 s.) The good news is it looks like there is a tiny bit of the date left, and there is a chance magnification could help.

Hub was changed in 1937. Someone who knows the hub differences may be able to place it in either 1917-36 or 1937-46 time frame. Mintmark style changed in 1941 also.
It might be helpful to take an image at a low angle with a flash or light to try to make any remnants of the date pop more so than a straight on image.
I see 1927
Perhaps if you take a white piece of paper and run a sharp #2 pencil across the date area it will provide enough detail. I've done this a few times with success. I agree I feel I can see a 27. JMO

The hubs were changed in 1918, 1937, and 1938. There’s not enough detail left of those changes (like sun rays and leaves/acorns) to be helpful, at least for me.
It’s obviously not 1916, as the mm was on the obverse that year (and part of 1917). The master die was modified to strengthen and deepen the gown lines starting in 1923. The coin seems to show this, so it was likely struck after 1921.
I don’t see evidence of 1927; the trace remnant I see is too large and too far left, but maybe I’m not seeing it properly.
