Any ideas why a "3" would be stamped onto the front of a '25 S Buffalo nickel?

Someone “Randomly” stamped the coin with a machinist’s punch…it would be nearly impossible to reason why they did so, but i would have to imagine that you are wondering if it adds any numismatic value to the coin and the answer is no….

Give the average male a punch tool and they HAVE to try it out on a piece of metal. Most males carried pocket change. Punch a coin or two and then spend them. Means nothing.

I worked in a few machine shops and it was like being in a candy store with it

Why's it gotta be a three. Rabbit ears or tatas. Peace Roy

No doubt the stamping was applied when the coin was either new or slightly worn.

Look at the bottom of the "3". It's worn away by circulation wear.

    Pretty cool!

Or, maybe the punch was held at a slight angle from the coin's surface.
