1928-S Peace dollar variety question

I have a 1928-s peace dollar PCGS graded ms64 with CAC sticker. I was looking at the coin today and it is a Vam 3 double motto that is not noted on the holder. Would the added value of this variety (which is suppose to be a top 50 variety) be worth the cost of PCGS regrading fee and resending to CAC for resticker after PCGS regrading. The pop shows ms64 is top pop with 20 and none higher but not sure it gets much if any premium. It doesn't look like any have sold since 2022 according to PCGS auction results, so not sure what it would bring now. I was thinking I might send it in for restoration service (due to a small toning spot) and add variety attribution. If I did the restoration service would I have any problem getting the CAC resticker if the coin looks a little different when I send it in. I would have the PCGS paperwork and pictures when I send it in. Any advice?

Probably the same as it brought in 2022. Check sold listings on eBay and GC if you really want to know.

The bump in value would almost certainly be smaller than the grading, shipping, and other fees. The VAM market for Peace dollars gets pretty thin, especially with coins already carrying some significant numismatic value. I wouldn’t personally bother with restoration on coins valued less than $1000, but that’s just me. An MS64 28-S would be borderline for me. They can come back worse, and there’s no guarantee that it would re-sticker.

Gotta check GC too. One sold Dec. 2024 for $2,025.

    However, non VAM ones.
    Sep 2025 - $,1969
    Aug 2025 - $1,857

    Similar date as above:
    Nov 2024 - $3,150

  • Any chance of upgrade? The 28s VAM3 goes through the roof per PCGS price guide at MS65.

Any 28-S goes way up in MS65, regardless of VAM. Chances of upgrade are very low but we can't really speculate without any pictures.

PCGS restoration assigns a new cert number, so CAC will treat it as a fresh submission vs. just the re-holder/variety attribution.

  • Thanks for the replies. I think it could upgrade to a 64+ since it already has a CAC sticker which would be top pop for the double motto variety. I may try PCGS reconsideration for a + upgrade and if it + I could add the Variety attribution. I would then have to get the CAC resticker but in the end I think it would a worth it. I am not going to consider the restoration since it probably doesn't need it and I could end up with grading fees and 2 shipping fees and could possible lose the CAC sticker

    Can you post a picture?
I really like 28-S Peace Dollars.

I would but I don't have any good photos and the ones I tried to take with my phone didn't come out very good. I tried to post them but I think they are to large to attach and I can't seem to find the resize option to get them under 50K. When I tried to drag the picture it put a url in the box and I wasn't sure if that was correct so I deleted it and gave up.

That url that it generated is the url of the image you uploaded. Drag and drop is the easiest way. Use the "preview" function to see what your post will look like and it also shows images that you put in.
