Speaking of Spanish Philippine coins - when was the last time you saw a few of them featured in banner ads over at GC? Ever? Check out what is closing on GC this coming Sunday?
Wondercoin.
There is an extremely interesting Philippine coin from 1899 in this auction.
It’s not a Spanish coin.
It is not U.S.-related.
Spainish rule was ending at the time, and U.S. occupation was in its earliest stages.
This coin comes from Malolos, a city just north of Manila, which served as a provincial capital, but more importantly, was the capital of the First Philippine Republic, effectively established at Malolos, Bulacan when the Republic itself was inaugurated there in January,1899, following the approval of the Malolos Constitution.
From Malolos itself, only revolutionary 2-centavo copper pieces are known; no other Malolos‑minted coin denominations are documented for that 1898–1899 window.
At the Malolos arsenal, two main “official” types of 2 centavos were struck for the First Philippine Republic, both copper and both dated 1899, differing primarily in the size of the date.
Specialized numismatic work further subdivides Malolos 2‑centavo pieces into three design types (two with sun-and-stars and sprig/pepper reverse, one with a triangle-and-sun obverse and wreath reverse), but all are 2‑centavo Malolos issues rather than different denominations.
During the same period, the revolutionary government also authorized paper money (not coins) in 1‑ and 5‑peso denominations, issued under Malolos Republic laws and often dry‑sealed and hand‑signed by finance officials.
Outside Malolos, there was separate revolutionary coinage such as 1‑centavo pieces from Panay, so in a catalogue context Malolos is one of only a couple of identified local issuers, but its contribution is confined to 2‑centavo copper.

Super cool coin, produced following a 333 year period of Spain’s colonial rule of the Philippines and during the first year of the Philippine-American War that followed.
December 1898: The Treaty of Paris was signed between Spain and the United States. In this treaty, Spain ceded the Philippines to the U.S. for $20 million, effectively ending Spain's colonial rule but transferring it to American control.
1899-1902: The Philippine-American War was fought as Filipino revolutionaries resisted American annexation.
An incredibly historical piece of the history of the Philippines!
