Beginner Question...

Hi - First Post! I've just got a pile of coins that was my step-grandpa's. It seems they're mostly only worth their weight in silver but I have a few to ask about over the next couple of days, then I'll be out of your hair. ;-) Thanks in advance for your help!

The first is this "walking half dollar." It's stamped "BAD" on both sides. Is this something the mint would have done prior to destroying it? Or who/why? Do you suppose it's worth anything as such?

That is called a counterstamp and would have been done by
someone after the coin left the mint. It is considered damage
but there are some who collect them. In this case your half
dollar is probably only worth it’s weight in the silver content.

This coin is counterfeit and probably not silver.

Maybe this can help your quest.

As a contemporary counterfeit it has value to collectors of those.

Ironically, it's value as a fake is probably around what it would have been worth for it's silver content had it been real.

@CHeller Welcome, you might consider purchasing the latest Whitman Red book for the specs on all US coins. IMO, the large print, spiral bound is the best one. Also slide by Harbor Freight for a digital gram scale and a digital caliper. Gonna be helpful with fakes. Good luck. Peace Roy
