Wheat pennies - "L on rim"

Looking through eBay simply to see what others are selling certain Lincoln wheats for and seems half the listings say their pennies are "RARE" due to the L touching the rim.

Now.... I look at the pics they post and while some of them are really close, most are not actually touching the rim.

My question is..... is this some form of scam thing? Is this actually a real thing? What's the deal?
Because of have a LOT of pennies with the L a lot closer and/or actually touching the rim.

In general, it would be best to provide an illustration such as an image with a question like this, or perhaps a link to what you are writing about. Regardless, what I interpret the question to be asking is about the endless scam listings on ebay. So, yes, these Lincolns and the offers for sale are nothing to most of us.

The whole L on or near rim is indeed a scam, there is no variety based upon that in Lincoln cents and that is not considered an error. Coins are mass produced and there are some tolerances that allow for things such as that.

Struck from worn or overused dies – very common, not considered an error,

The only instance I know of where an L touching the rim is important is that it is just one diagnostic for a 1922 no D Lincoln Cent with the Strong Reverse.

If you have "a lot" of them with the L on the rim, you can rest assured everyone else does as well. This is not an error, not a rarity and not worth a fortune.

While coins with that feature aren’t rare or valuable, “scam” sounds at least somewhat over the top.

Notice the seller has 0 feedback score…..so another ‘let me reel you in on this really scarce coin’ seller….of which there are literally 100’s of on eBay. They all use the same wording with horrible photos and a common coin hoping to nab that one unsuspecting buyer. Buyer beware! 😉
