1982 D penny

Hello everyone,
I’m new to collecting coins. Just have some Morgan dollars and Kennedy half dollars. Nothing of high value really. I did come across this 1982 D penny and googled it. Looks like it is of some value. I’m wondering if I should have it graded first then sell or just sell it as is on EBay? Thank you.

Howdy and welcome. This was an easy coin to quickly assess for you, but in the future you should tell folks exactly why you think a coin is valuable or unusual instead of making us all guess what you are thinking. Good luck!

Technically, you are correct, because 1 cent qualifies as "some value".

As you are new to coin collecting why did you feel the need to obtain a scale? It cannot possibly do you any good if you don't know what you are looking at.

Hey, been collecting over 70 years and I understand the thrill of looking through pocket change still to this day. Don't bother with Google. Check out some numismatic websites like: Coppercoins.com, or Varietyvista.com and of course Vamworld.com.
A lot better than any Google search.
Good luck in your hunts and hope you do find something worth a ton.

Hello. It is a great hobby. The exuberance and passion drives us all. The search is as fun as the find.

Your 82 D large date, 3.1 wt. is a great starting point. Save it.
Look for the sexy or curvy looking 2. As seen below.

  • Hi, thank you all for the reply. This is what I got from Google. I thought I’d run it by you guys. hehe.

Yes, but you have the common LARGE DATE

When you see that, you need to read and check for everything. It's stated right there:

And if you're not sure, ask a follow-up question:

One thing Google AI doesn’t mention is that only 2 are known to exist. It might also show the difference in appearance of at least the Small date 2 and Large date 2. There are other ways but this is a good test.

Small date is on the left.

Google notes it if you click "See More." It even includes the prices realized for each.

  • Thank you for all the replies. It’s of great help. I am curious as to why only 2 of the small date are known to exist? How many were minted at the time of minting? So the rest are just “somewhere out there “ and just haven’t been discovered? Or were some melted for war efforts?

I guess your AI mentor didn't bother to explain it. ;)

The coin you are searching for wasn't supposed to exist. That specific coin (date/mm/size) wasn't planned. It only exists because some copper (bronze) planchets got hung up in the equipment somewhere at the mint and then entered the minting process after the change has been made to copper plated zinc.

There is no way to know how many exist. I'm sure there are more out there, but it could be a few or a few dozen, for example. We'll never know for sure.

    What war?
