Made my first AU58+ Capped Bust and its a POP 1

EDLEDL Posts: 65 ✭✭✭✭

Here it is:

1834 50c o.102

I cracked this coin out of an NGC AU53 and was extremely surprised when I got the grades back. This coin is currently at CAC. Total luster bomb in hand, zero complaints whatsoever.

Great looking Bustie. I amazed that NGC under-graded her by 2 and a plus grades.

    Congratulations, that coin is awesome.

Would love to see a @PhilArnold GreatPhoto of her.

I can't tell if you're kidding or not but if not..right click on the photo and select "Open Image In New Tab" or, if on a phone, hold on the picture and then select "Open Image In New Tab".

However nice the coin might look in the images, why do take it as a given that NGC undergraded the coin, rather than that (gasp😮) PCGS overgraded it?

Will be interesting to see if CAC gives her a sticker.

  • it has the toning look that I really love for my personal collection. That said... does it really look AU-58? That's a fair amount of friction on the cheek, joined by noticeable circulation marks.

Either way, it's a beauty and congratulations on getting to own it.

Because NGC undergrading a circulated coin would be a rare occurrence.

Maybe NGC gave it a technical grade of 53 due to the contact marks vs. a 58+ market grade from PCGS. Either way, it's a beautiful coin.

There are a small percentage of coins that are "curve balls", hard to grade with certainty. As JP Martin said on these boards, he'd often have two grades in mind before assigning a final grade. I've seen a second tier service call a Bust 50c "AU55" that NGC called "58PL". If a coin is "no problem" NGC will often give it the best they can without later getting embarrassed when "problems" can be shared online, or a complicated grade assigned.

Must had been in an old no line fatty to acquire that type of toning, which btw I also admire. Hard to grade from that type of photography but at the minimum its gorgeous and the maximum its high au

Many of my 58 and 58+ are being sold at great collections I don’t know if any are left but you can check on their site my collection was most all 58

In the interest of fairness and equal enforcement, I have flagged this post. It's a pure advertisement for items for sale and it's in someone else's completely unrelated thread.

Sorry OP, back to your gorgeous coin with an improbable (on paper) upgrade.

I’m guessing the toning was acquired by long term album storage, rather than from the NGC holder.
Though I’ve seen as well as heard of the old ANACS holders imparting blue rim toning….

Hot take: that 2nd skin post dip recoloring doesn't really float my boat even when it comes in metallic on coins with luster. I suspect it was blast white dipping off the rub when it went into an early era NGC holder and they dinged it for that. The Rev looks like stike weakness but her bust and cheek look like handling and bag marks. A 2nd skinned AU55+ to these eyes

Not to rain on OP’s parade but I can’t imagine how that is a 58+ with that reeding mark on the neck.
