Thoughts on CAC crossover or PCGS regrade

Clackamas1Clackamas1 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭✭✭

Back in the day, around 2003 I was making Lincolns. I scored a large hoard of awesome 1958-P rolls from the bay. At the time there were only 3 MS67's and PCGS was tough as nails. 50's P Lincolns are tough in MS67. Anyway I made one in 67RD. It is now a 67+RD and is the prime photo in coin facts and clearly one of the finest known. Anyway, I had 4 other 58-P's in that submission that are gorgeous and were graded 66RD. I held them all these years because I can't bear to sell them at 66RD prices. I have them sitting in front of me, all consecutive SN's and they are amazing, I was angry they did not go 67RD then. This was before plus and tru-view. I am convinced they will upgrade at PCGS but I was thinking of sending the to CAC instead. It would be a crossover but I don't want them back in 66RD holders, I would want a bean instead and there seems to be no way to cross them at a min grade so my other thought was to go to PCGS. These would be thousand dollar coins in 67+RD. What would you do?

Set minimum grade on CACG form.

Or submit them to PCGS under the “Reconsideration” option.

I would think this would garner the most success upon first blush.

If there's a big price jump from 66 to 67 (as I interpret your post to say) I imagine there are a lot of 66RD coins that are between very nice and just-miss 67 (I suppose that could change a bit with the advent of + grades... now some of those are 66+RD). That makes me question the value of a sticker a bit. A gold sticker would be great of course, but if CAC sees a really nice 66-should-make-67, will it get gold or green?

Unlike series/grades where many examples may be unoriginal or otherwise have some less than desirable feature, I would also think most 66RD coins look pretty decent, so how different is a sticker vs. no sticker coin? I can't say the best way to do it (though Mark's suggestion for reconsideration seems smart), but if your goal is to maximize your dollar, my inclination is that you really need a holder to say 67, not a 66 with a sticker.

I have the form printed out and there does not seem to have that as an option although logic would say they must. Is this something you just write by hand on the form?

I did all my submissions online at CACG and you can specify what grade you will accept. All the way down to Details holder or not.

Sell the current one before you score upgrades and increase the pop.

I sold it a long time ago to DPoole as part of his great Lincoln collection and it has since changed hands. That coin is superior so there is no worry to the current owner but these are dang close.

Crack them out and resubmit. If as you say they are awesome coins and deserving, they will definitely get at least 66 and with grade-flation it sounds like they’ll likely 7 anyway. I think it’s your best shot. Love to see them, I’ll bet they’re blazers!

I think the way I’d go is do the pcgs reconsideration service first, this will keep the old holders if they don’t upgrade. If any do upgrade, then send only those to cac for stickering.

Odds are strongly against you if you think you can take a pcgs66 holder and gold bean it.

Odds are more in your favor to green bean if the coin is in either a 66 or 67 holder.

If you are that confident in the quality crack and send to PCGS, they market grade and that is your best shot at getting a high grade.
