Strong Prices at the Stacks Bowers Sale

I was tracking 3 coins but only really wanted 1. Just watching the German material and most went for some strong prices. I did get the one I wanted 1907J 1 Mark PCGS PR67.
Anyone else? Doesn't have to be German.

Varied. I bought a coin i didn't even want because it went so cheaply.

Prices seemed average/low for early gold with the volume of lots offered between HA and Stacks in the same week.
The 1795 $5 MS61 PCGS/CAC at SB went for $144,000 in 2022 IIRC.
Only got $111,000 last week.
Seller lost over $50k on that coin. Ouch.
ouch is right. damn.

I believe you will see more and more of this price uncertainty and market drop as the jobs and financial market reflect the political uncertainty facing the US nationally and internationally. 3 1/2 years more of
this and the question is : Will we ever recover ? Remember, this hobby originates from and depends upon pride and faith in our history, past and future.
I got one Morgan for more than I wanted to pay although I suspect it's under graded and one for less.

Too many auctions in a short period of time. The market absorbed it fairly well, but even nice coins shouldn’t be auctioned repeatedly for best performance. It makes people wonder why it’s a permanent orphan.
A lot of other early gold brought top dollar.

Depends on the premium he paid to sell.

How do you know that the seller was the same person who won the auction in 2022? If he wasn’t, he might have lost even more (or less).

That was a strong price in 2022. I know because I was the underbidder. I did not bid this time. So the top two bidders in 2022 were on the sideline this time.
And Mark, I am pretty sure the Chicago Collection seller was the purchaser in 2022.

@breakdown what change led to your decision not ti bid this time?

It’s unrealistic to pay top dollar for a coin in the middle of a pandemic and expect to sell it for a profit or break even in an auction setting three years later and Fairmont didn’t help. Even though this wasn’t a Fairmont coin there are a lot disillusioned gold collectors who are still on the sidelines. This coin probably would have done better if it was sold privately.
The stock market is at an all time high and the folks who are buying six figure coins are in very good shape financially. I don’t think they’re sitting around waiting for a new president.
Catbert,
I was not a buyer at any of the ANA auctions this year for various reasons that are not coin-related. I liked the coin. A few of my ex-coins were in Chicago’s sale by the way. He sold relatively soon after purchasing some of his coins and I think that affected the auction prices.

I missed out on buying a pattern late last year direct from a well known dealer. Someone was faster than me! Bought the same coin sold for $2k less in the auction last week. I was pleased!
Political posts are always welcome on this forum. Thanks so much for your contribution.
@breakdown . I don't bid on coins at this level but wil admit that one of the first things I check is when was the coin last for sale. Short time periods make me wonder why they are selling so fast and I would say 90% of the time I get coins for less than what the original seller paid. Perhaps there is a certain built in price resistance. I know in the past I have felt like someone was running up the price on me and did not mind get the coin I wanted for less. james

One possible reason for a quick resale is that the owner bid on, and "won", their own item. So they auction it again (but bid less the second time around).

All I will say is that sometimes I can be a very sore loser. A gentleman with a tag name of Elmer etc. posted a link to his collection of Seated Halves today. It was a joy to look at but I am pretty certain looking at at least a half dozen of his coins I may have called him some very unkind things in the past. James
The Tompkins bust quarters sold really strong....at least the lots I was tracking. Double price guide or more for the nice CAC examples.
Fudd knows how to dig deep and pony up.... I share in this postpartum sulking whenever I find that there is another board member unhinged enough to out nuke my nuke, we're all in good company here.
