Meaning of a PCGS "no grade"

Hi,
I purchased a Reformation-era medal that had been sent to PCGS, but wasn't graded, but I can't quite discern why. Per the image, it appears that they included the medal's details (which I infer means PCGS concurred with authenticity), but it wasn't holdered and the fees were refunded. The handwritten note "None graded at PCGS" is of most interest - would PCGS say something like "we've never graded one of these before, so we can't grade this one"?

Thanks for any info y'all can provide!

Last time it happened to me, it was a large, rectangular French medal that they couldn’t fit into the holder.

It had been graded, the grade was posted, then disappeared the following day (I guess after they tried and failed to holder it).

For yours, the “grade” code of 96 isn’t listed here, so not exactly sure why.

From the holder, I don't understand the "Augustana Coll". I graduated from Augustana College in South Dakota in 1966 in Engineering, so I'm curious. But not so unknowledgeable that I hadn't heard of the Augustana collection.

I suspect it is a medal that PCGS simply does not grade. It might help to post an image just to see if there could be a more compelling reason.

I suspect they don't grade this medal. It's possible that it was mounted and if that is correct, then it would get a details grade.

I’ve seen no-grade for unverifiable tokens and medals that are undocumented in reference works. If they can’t look it up, they at times are unable to describe its origin, date, legends etc.

From the looks of the PCGS tag, they found it in two catalogs and it fit in a holder.

    So it’s still a question.

Is the piece cast rather than struck?
