    California Split
    The Gambler ( 1974 James Caan ).

Check those 2 out of you get a chance, hardcore 70's movies but great gambling movies for sure

    Never saw the first one.

I've watched The Gambler multiple times. I won't do a spoiler alert, unless you want me to. But the first time I watched the movie, I didn't quite understand the ending. When Caan after the very successful point shaving game, wandered off into the bad neighborhood, gets slashed with a knife, and seemed happy about it.

That’s not exactly how I remember the ending of the gambler going but it’s been many years since I watched it. I thought he was slashed by a prostitute because he was itching for a fight with a pimp. I believe they wanted to convey self-destructive behavior because he felt guilty about putting one of his students in that position. You’re talking about the original or the remake?

I also liked Rounders and I think it’s a good caricature of poker.

The Poker Boom. of the early 2000's started with this movie, obviously an all time favorite

Absolute classic. Frankly, I always thought there would be a part 2. IE Matt Damon now having the money after taking down Teddy KGB, goes and plays in the WSOP. Of course Worm shows up somehow, and bugs him for money, causes trouble, etc.

Years ago I watched around the last couple hours of that WSOP when Jamie Gold won. I've never seen a player so hot in my life. At the table he kept saying how good he was playing, Yea, like it's tough to play when you're catching every conceivable card, hand after hand.

it's my most memorable WSOP ME. i watched every episode. Gold getting hit by the deck practically the entire tournament.......his speech play that befuddled opponents.......his speech play and antics that broke rules into a million pieces, yet he was never penalized........it was sheer entertainment throughout

i'll never forget the final table when he had an almost insurmountable lead, yet Allen Cunningham's presence still scared him. iirc, Allen went all-in with 7s and Gold called him with queen high, knowing full well that he'd never be able to outplay him in the long run so he summarily stuck in chips preflop in order to take him out........and of course he hit and did just that

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

    Yes the original

So your take on it about putting that student in a bad spot is pov I've never considered, interesting take

My take is that he hates himself and was glad he got what he deserved, a slash across the cheek with that blade

It's an interesting topic for sure, I mean many self destructive people hate themselves and that includes Gamblers at that level.

California Split came out in 1974 and stars Elliot Gould, it has a lot of humor in it, it's not as dark as the gambler but it's a good watch if you can power through a hardcore 70's movie.

My father has been a gambler all his life and turned me on to these movies

Let it Ride is just a masterpiece of comedy lol.

It used to be on the “cult classics” shelf along with movies like Brazil, Omega Man, Evil Dead, Cool Hand Luke, etc. at Hollywood Video.

The original. I didn't see the remake.

    Yes it's about self-destructive behavior.

Gold then must of felt like he was some sort of unbeatable poker God.

He learned the hard that he wasn't.

That scene where Dreyfuss walked around asking the other horse players who they like. Then immediately he scratches out that number on his program. Until he was left with only one horse who nobody else liked. He bet everything on that long shot horse, and it won. LOL
