Rare “Missing Foot” Walking Liberty Proof Discovery Piece 😁
The GreatPhoto just posted and I clicked the large version of the image only to immediately get hit with the question of “where did her foot go??” Does anyone know what causes this? I’m guessing just an obverse proof die that gets over polished beyond its useful life? Think I found a couple of weak foot coins from potentially the same die, but beyond that haven’t found any other references to this rare and clearly super important footless liberty variety.

I have never seen that before, I guess you are right @DrewU.
I’ve never seen a Walker with that much polishing before, but I think you are right. The outreached hand and flag are also missing a lot of detail, probably from over polishing.
I like the “More Images” button in the CoinFacts app for things like this. You can find the coin/date of interest, then scroll through a bunch of TrueViews of different examples. A quick look at this date shows that there are others with some detail polished out. But I didn’t see any as extreme as the example you posted above.
Very cool find!

Could be as simple as a grease filled die.

Some of the skirt lines are pretty weak as well as the other areas mentioned. Very cool find!
