I have been given permission to metal detect 5 acres of wooded property from a close friend and his gf. She actually owns the property and stated several times her grandfather would bury money instead of using the bank. My question is if I was to find something valuable what is a normal price to pay the land owner? We have not discussed sharing any finds at all.

Yes, discuss the split before you swing.
Locate old building or homesteads. Often someone inside the building could see where his stash is buried.
Check fence lines and rock wall.
Any unusual large or oddly shaped trees.
Of course any depressions that are out of place.
Rarely just out in some 5 acre field as it could be very hard to relocate, especially with snow cover.
Common sense on buried loot.

PS: just sold my last detector, bummer. But, swinging it is no longer possible. Heck to by 80.

Sounds like an exciting opportunity. First, agree on the split with property owner. Then on to the hunt. Based on my experience, people hid jars of money under fence posts and at the base of trees and sometimes inside root cellars. Hope you have a pinpointer and kneepads.
