That's a nice type set. I should probably do this someday. The total cost keeps me from actualy doing it so far...

Very nice. I've never seen so many 58+ coins. Nice.

Finally, here’s one I could sure use some help/insight with…….PR45??
I did not have a proof grade on my Bingo card with this one. I’m admittedly not a Seated Liberty quarter guy in terms of ever having gone deep into the series……but can certainly generally tell a proof from a business strike. What did I miss…..or did our hosts accidentally make a clerical error?? I know it happens. But I make a lot more mistakes than PCGS does.
I have a “no proofs” rule in my type set so was disappointed in this result. Would love some opinions/education/knowledge from the board on this one:
Graded PR45…..was expecting XF40 or maybe XF45 on a “good day”.
I would need to see the 1882 in hand... I would have been at EF45 based solely on the image.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Tough to say, but the business strikes are more valuable and pretty scarce, and the rim is broad and the dentils very sharp, so PCGS probably erred on the side of caution and called it Proof.
@MEJ7070 very nice coins, thanks for posting for us.
Sugar magnolia blossoms blooming, heads all empty and I don't care ...
Very nice! I can see the time and effort you put into those coins! 👍
Disclaimer: I'm not a dealer, trader, grader, investor or professional numismatist. I'm just a hobbyist. (To protect me but mostly you! 🤣 )
I certainly paid a business strike price for it. I thought I had just found myself a hammered example of a really tough date…..the idea that it could be a proof strike never even crossed my mind……but again that doesn’t mean anything’s and I readily admit I could definitely have been wrong all along.
I would expect to see more reflective surfaces and a lot more chatter…….but I don’t know if I’ve ever actually handled a PR45 anything.
Very Nice Examples!
.
One key difference is the date placement. At first glance, both the proof die and business die appear to have the same date placement. But it is actually a little different. Proof on the left, Business on the right:
Wow! The Bust half dime is my favorite. That Seated dime is pretty, too.
Ask me my favorite tomorrow and I might have a different answer.
@dcarr
Thank you VERY much for taking the time to respond with this information. Exactly what I was hoping for. I really appreciate it!
I realize it’s near impossible to tell from pictures, but would I be correct in now assuming that this is a proof planchet that I just completely missed? Or, is the date location the primary indicator for identifying proofs from business struck coins here?
Again, I haven’t handled very many circulated 19th century proof coins at all……but the surfaces here lack the reflectivity I would normally associate with proofs, which is why I made this mistake to begin with.
Sincerely appreciate the education. This forum rocks.
Very nice set!
Did you assemble it all raw originally or were some cracked out of holders? Either way, you have some great grades and a good eye for quality!
Cool! I bet it was a good time getting your set graded and back to you.
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
Thank you very much. I just went back and looked at all my notes/records.
Of that submission, I’d purchased 29 of the coins raw and the other 22 were crackouts. So a pretty even mix. All of the coins that were cracked were done immediately after purchase to stick into my album, most of them years ago.
Favorite raw purchases of the coins I’ve shared are definitely Capped Bust HD, 50 D Jefferson, 75 CC trade dollar, and the 38 Lincoln.
Interesting crackout results were the 64 Kennedy bumping from NGC 64 to PC 66 (I agree with PCGS), the 17 S SLQ going from ANACS 62 (blue holder) to PC58+, and the type 1 Buff going from NGC funbox 96 to PCGS 66+ (agree with PCGS, although the coin is more colorful with more vivid rainbow rim coloring than the Trueviews allow).
One more “fun” one from this submission……I didn’t expect a straight grade and I didn’t get one……but a man can dream. I still love it tbh
@MEJ7070 . I love your 75-CC Trade Dollar. It is very impressive you added a CC coin for a type set. So many go for the lowest common denominator. I also love that gritty "done my job" look. Always makes me just a little prouder to give one of these a good retirement home. James
