    I know I’m old because…

I remember when bullion dealers were buying silver for triple face value.

I remember when an 1882/3/4 Carson City GSA only cost $50.

I remember when third-party grading was a new ‘fad’ started by ANACS.

I remember when gold was $350 an ounce.

I remember when the bicentennial quarters, halves and dollars were first introduced and could be pulled from change in large numbers.

I remember when people collected stamps just as much as coins.

I remember when companies sold poly vinyl chloride coin album pages to unsuspecting collectors.

I remember when owning a set like I own now was a fantastic pipe dream and, even if I had the funds, could never even be accomplished, because there was no Internet.

I remember the Dawn of eBay when rare, grade-able, problem-free, raw Coins could be harvested for a song and sent in to the TPGS to be ‘made’.

I remember when old green holders were new green holders.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

I remember getting Morgan and Peace dollars from the bank for face value. I remember getting buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, SLQs, and WLHs in change on a regular basis. I remember when all coins were raw and third-party grading didn't exist. I remember when coin dealers used two different grading standards---one for buying and one for selling. I remember buying my first Saint-Gaudens gold $20 for $47. I remember silver coins freely circulated and when clad coins first entered circulation in 1965. I could go on but you get the picture that I'm an old guy. :D

You know you're old when you're a hold-out on digital payments and insist on cash (WalMart self-pay machines have spat out $1 Silver Certificates and star notes) and coin... I've found two 2019 W quarters that way, and silver nickels occasionally come out of tills.

I've been told that the current term for an older person is "UNC". You hafta admit, it's amusing. "Whaddya mean I'm uncirculated!? Wait---you can tell just by looking at me that I DON'T sleep around!?"

When you can remember spending a Morgan silver dollar. When gold was pegged at $35.00 per ounce by the government. When silver was $1.29 per ounce. You could get silver dollars from the banks at face value. When president Richard Nixon took the country ((temporarely (actually permanently)) off the gold standard. You remember the assassination of JFK . Gas was 25.9 cents per gallon. Bill Mazoroski winning the world series over the New York Yankees in Oct. 1960 with a ninth inning home run. When Joe Nameth gaurenteed victory for the NY jets in superbowl III. When the New York mets won the world series in 1969. When your neighbor had a 1964 Plymouth valiant with a slant 6 engine that seemed to last forever. When Ford motor company introduced the Mustang in 1964.
When man landed on the moon in 1969. When Dwight Eisenhower was president.

When you realize the freshly minted 1965 clad quarter you pulled from upon its release in to circulation by the Mint in November, 1965 (which you still have in your collection) will in a few months be 60 years old.

  • SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 12,570 ✭✭✭✭✭

Also, when a person realizes that when he or she were born the mint still produced gold coins for circulation (for example my wife's aunt who was born in 1929).
