I have been shipping eBay sales this weekend and when I went to print the label I noticed a dramatic increase in price.

I was going to print a label for an 8x6x4 10 oz package and they wanted $8.19. I thought that seemed much higher than usual so I went to Ship Station and printed the same label for only $5.41. That is a 34% price increase.

What gives? I have had no notice from eBay or the USPS about any price increases.

Has anyone else noticed this?

This is not a one time thing,,,, I have printed 6 labels so far this weekend and all had similiar price increases at eBay.

The USPS did just raise prices.... so I'm sure ebay followed suit. (Or perhaps they haven't adjusted discounts for the change and are charging for the full USPS amount?). But yes... I noticed a nice rise in prices also.

    Yeah, they just raised it

Did they raise prices by 34%?

Heres the new price list, some things did increase by 34%, others 7%. Priority mail flat rate boxes are one of the items in the 34% tier, up to 11.70 now before signature, used to be like 8.70. PM always takes 3-4 business days for me now these days anyway so I mostly use Fedex for actual two day service, it's like $30. Medium Flat rate boxes just raised to $16 6 months ago, now they're 21.05.

I tested out an old listing that lets one reprint a label and the rates were up but not 34%. Location makes a difference. In this case IL to NY was under $6 for 10oz and under $5 for 8oz. The flat rate box was $9.25 (up from $8.95).

  • GRANDAMGRANDAM Posts: 8,751 ✭✭✭✭✭

My 34% example was from IN to KY,,,,,, neighboring states about 110 miles.

Pirateship is the best option for the lowest shipping rates.

It remains somewhat funny to me that eBay gets blamed for everything. I'm surprised people don't complain that eBay changes their clocks twice per year. 🙄

  • jmlanzafjmlanzaf Posts: 36,394 ✭✭✭✭✭

The eBay vs Ship Station sounds more like the priority price vs ground advantage.

  • tincuptincup Posts: 5,387 ✭✭✭✭✭

Ebay certainly does get blamed for lots of things! But the postal rates are certainly out of ebay's control. I think it's great that they provide discounts from the USPS rates when you use their label printout option. And the ebay standard envelope... is fantastic! (yes, it went up in price also).

And despite the issues that may arise from time to time with ebay... it has been great for me! And I continue to use ebay... though for how much longer I do not know. The way shipping prices are going with ebay (and other venues) some items just are not economical to sell and ship any more.

No loss of discount but I just printed a label for a 2# 10 oz package to IL. It was $6.53 and priced the same thru eBay and ship station so maybe just a glitch last night in eBay’s system. I will continue comparing prices for awhile to see.

I just checked a Ground Advantage package that size and weight and the price I see is 5.41 for far East Texas to Tucson just as an example. I use USPS.com Click-n-Ship, which gives you a commercial rate, and then either drop it at the post office or have it picked up, no price difference, just faster to go direct to the post office. I use it a lot, except for higher value items when I use FedEx 2 day or overnight.

I'm not sure why USPS would give Pirateship a better rate than they give ebay but idk

I was just shipping a package from NY to MD, pirateship is the exact same account as ebay $6,34 GA and $7.66 priority. The UPS abs FedEx numbers are also identical. Do you have any specific examples where there is a difference ?

[The internet days the icky time it is cheaper is for small heavy packages where cubic pricing applies.]

I've used both in the past and began noticing Pirateship was cheaper than ebay on many occasions or I'd have used ebay instead. Maybe I just have a preferred pricing with Pirateship. ;)

Well, I have shipped several more packages over the last few days and I compared prices.

The eBay shipping prices seem to be back to normal for me and they were the same price as via Ship Station.

I am not sure why a 10 oz package was costing me $2.78 more via eBay than Ship Station over the weekend but it was.

Must have been a glitch in the system.

OK, the gross overcharging via eBay shipping labels is back again. I just tried to print an eBay label for a 4 oz package and the cost was going to be $8.22. The same label via ShipStation was. $4.22. Both were 4 oz packages the sime size and USPS Ground Advantage.

This is $4.00 more via eBay as compared to ShipStation, this is almost 2x the cost via eBay, :s

What is going on here? It seems that so far the overcharging is occuring on the weekends.

    eBay cost:

    ShipStation cost:

Both the packages I have shown were going to Lexington, KY, only about 110 miles away.

I will call eBay after awhile and see what they can tell me.

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,UPDATE,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I just got off the phone with eBay. They said they are aware of the problem, that it has been happening since LAST year but they don't know what is causing it.

She suggested that I compare prices when buying my labels.

I can't believe that 10 months later that they can't fix the problem.

I didnt notice the increase, but everything that I ship priority is somewhere between 8 and 10 dollars. USPS is getting expensive, partly because they are the only government agency that have a requirement to actually fully fund their retirement system.

I've had coins go missing, or arriving with nothing in the padded envelope. If you bought it on Ebay and used their tracking, they will cover the cost. The process is a bit hard to describe, but you need to open a "non delivery investigation" using the details page and contact the seller. I dont know what the sellers experiences are like, but on the Ebay app the tracking just ends: Heres a screen shot of one:

    Purchase History

    Details

To be clear, this has nothing to do with the Seller. It was USPS that F'd up.

My friend is a retired carrier, who says: If you really want it to get there, send it FedEX because if anything gets lost, they lose their job.

Usps is still much better than the alternatives in price and efficiency, but of course their infrastructure is federal and quite overwhelming to the competition. I tell people at the post office that they'd save money with paypal's shipping feature.

I've never had that bug. I ship daily including weekends. Have you tried calling ebay,

What's the value of the package? Is there insurance?

Did you try a more normal package size? There is a note there about irregular package size

That's incorrect. There is data in this. There are differences by service tier but not any clear advantage for any one carrier.

FedEx is no better. Local guy sent a $15k package of gold via FedEx. It disappeared. 2 weeks later he got a call from a guy who found the still unopened package behind the seat of a rental van.

My FedEx guy left a $5000 ADULT SIGNATURE REQUIRED package on my front porch without a signature

USPS is not the best or most reliable quick ship IMO. FedEx One Rate price for a two day envelope (8.5" x 11" that can hold a number of coins in slabs that are inside the sticky cardboard coin mailers and wrapped with an invoice and single layer of small bubble wrap) from East Texas to California is only 10.95 looking in my Fed Ex account, and this is how GC sends me coins all the time. But you must select the service under the one rate, otherwise the same 2 day letter cost s $35.50 so this is an important step.

See above, I called eBay. Package is 8x6x2 at 4 oz. I didn’t check irregular size package. Value is less than $100 covered by Ground Advantage included insurance.

eBay says they have been having this problem off and on for over 10 months.

I was going by memory. Both packages were identical size and weight. At any rate the difference in size on a 4 oz package wouldn’t matter.

The insurance rates are outrageous, especially since they never lose them. I don't buy extra insurance unless it is closer to $1000.

Not sure why I do and it's a process I will probably abandon. Hard to tell how much money I've lost in the 20+ years of selling and especially after never having lost a package nor filed a claim. Maybe a DUH moment. Lol
