Ebay - Another absolute failure!

I was just trying to bid on a relatively tough autographed HOFer baseball on ebay. As I normally do, I clicked on the place bid button with about 30 seconds left in the auction.

This time, for the first time ever (I've been on ebay for 25 years), I had to request a phone call from ebay, where I would get an 8-digit security code that I had to then enter.

Well, after getting through the AI voice instructions, as I was getting the first digit of the code, the auction ended, and at a price well below what I was going to bid.

I then tried to put a bid in on another item, this time with over an hour left in it. I had to go through the same thing again; request a phone call to get an 8-digit security code, and enter it. On top of that, I was required to put in a method of payment to use if I win; Now as I said, I've been on ebay for 25 years, and have always paid via paypal, and always on time; I have never had a late payment.

So just a word of warning to all. If you try to bid on anything, you may have to allow time to request a phone call from ebay, where they will give you an 8-digit security code you have to enter before you bid, along with verifying a potential method of payment. Oh, and allow plenty of time for the security code to be recited; there was at least a full second between each digit.

Which cards were you bidding on?

This sounds like a setting the seller chose for extra security to scrutinize potential bidders.

When eBay requires an 8-digit code to bid, it's likely a measure to enhance the security of your account and the bidding process, potentially as part of their 2-step verification system.
Here's why eBay might implement such a measure
Protecting your account: The 8-digit code, often a one-time passcode (OTP) or generated by an authenticator app, adds an extra layer of security beyond your password. Even if someone obtains your password, they wouldn't be able to access your account without this second verification step, according to eBay.
Preventing unauthorized bidding: This verification helps ensure that only the authorized account holder can place bids, preventing unauthorized use of your account and potentially costly mistakes or malicious bidding activity.
Preventing fraud and unauthorized account access: Using a code makes it harder for malicious actors to access accounts and engage in fraudulent activities like "bid sniping" or other scams.
In essence, the 8-digit code acts as an additional security layer, verifying your identity before you can proceed with the bid. It's a proactive measure to safeguard your account and ensure a secure bidding experience on eBay.

I don't know about that, being that it was a Probstein auction.

Ok. Seems logical. Could it have been a glitch in their wonky system? Or somebody else tried to hack your account, so they flagged it?

No need to fret, if the item sold for less that seller desired he will never ship to the winner, but claim he did, and will auction it over and over until that number is met. eBay of course will not care as rules apply only to non large scale sellers aka the peons

I had a snipe set through Gixen on a Probstein auction last night that never went through. My snipe was over $100 more than the card sold for. I wonder if there was an issue with Probstein's auctions last night?

What did gixen say was the issue. It always gives a reason if a scheduled bid is not placed

Status was "too many requests" I've never had that issue before with Gixen.

It evidently was a Gixen wide thing on 7/9... so just bad luck

Something similar happened to me twice, different auctions, different seller, several days apart.
When trying to enter a bid, it asked me to enter a payment method. (but no phone call)
I of course have one on record already for many years.
I just hit the back button, then tried again to bid, and it went through no problem.
Figured it was just a glitch.

I had that happen recently as well (may have been 7/9) and it probstein as well. I had never seen that code before. I also subscribe and have the mirror service, so baffling.

Item sold for less than my bid, but guessing if others were affected, it might have gone much higher. The winning bidder maybe just got very lucky in this case.
