eBay Extended Bidding is Here - 2 min window

https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/bidding/bidding?id=4003

“We're currently testing extending auction durations by 2 minutes when a bid is placed in the last 2 minutes of an auction. This test will apply to select items in the Trading Cards category. Please make sure you're on the latest version of the app to see this feature.”

Sniping will no longer be of use. Surprised it has taken this long. Good for the seller, not so much the buyer. Thoughts?

Makes sens for them. And better for us in my opinion no need to put a super high bid you may get stuck paying. Fortunately it never happened to me but could have multiple times I put in a way to high bid (ex: item sold for 120$ and I put 200$ max bid). I do not do that anymore because of the chance of been called out by another intense bidder then paying way to much.

I kind of hate the idea. Let the auction end when it ends. Whoever put in the highest bid wins. However they did it or when they did it up to them. If you lost you have nothing to complain about. Your bid was too low.

I get it more with the big auction houses and extremely valuable cards. But I only want to play that game every so often. Stressful and unnerving. Personally I just want it to be over as soon as possible. Not stay up til 2 3 am seeing if I was outbid and then react if I was.

So on set breaks I can get cheap high numbers because everyone else will still be bidding on card #10.

Maybe a lot of people are focused on card #10, but all it takes is 2 people to be interested in every card in that set break to have all the auctions extended. This will help sellers, but I'm not liking this as a buyer. I agree with Ulysses.

This still requires interested bidders to be actively present at the exact time an auction ends. It will definitely impact high demand / low supply items, but I think your average sniping on a random item ending at 10 PM on a Monday will hold.

True but I would think set breaks will be hard to juggle if someone wants say 10 cards.

So is it just 2 mins or will it keep extending 2 mins if there are more bids?

I think that they need to only do this on certain items. For instance, if an item's bidding exceeds $1,000, or if there are more than 20 bidders involved in the bidding. Some sort of filter to keep it from being annoying for every single item.

Questioning the usefulness of these forums as I had to answer my own question... I never liked bid sniping so I don't object to this. The bid sniper's argument seems to be that they will no longer be able to get items for less than their value.

There is gonna be some schmuck that drinks 10 red bulls and stays up 30 hours to shill his bids every 2 minutes for all 100 of his cards he sent to a consignment seller.

I would assume it's 2 min every time someone bids in the extended time until there's no bidding but I have not read the fine print yet.

This was similar to my initial reaction of thinking that the distribution and consumption of alcoholic beverages will dramatically increase along with the drunken final bids.

I’m most interested in how this benefits eBay. Higher prices more fees? Or do they think it will increase the number of auctions? What does the data say I wonder.

Nobody pays more attention than the seller. Big opportunity to shill.
