I am not an expert but I say yes, it is a wood grain on the reverse.

The reverse looks like it was partially burnished with something rough.
Woody…it shows on the obverse as well
Looks more abrasion to me, this is what I would consider the woody effect from my box of randoms

Definitely woodgrain, which is seen on both sides, look at the obverse from 5 to 9 o'clock. It happens due to an alloy mixing issue so it affects the entire planchet all the way through -- and of course it will be located on same region of the coin if it does not cover the entire coin. So front lower and back upper at 180 degree different angle must be the result.

Looks like it could be a combination of woodgrain and abrasion to me. Someone might have tried to remove the woodgrain anomaly not knowing what it is and found out it's not removable after doing a scrub job on the piece with an abrasive of some kind.

If it is a woody.... why is the effect not showing inside the letters in ONE?
My first impression was a woodgrain effect... but after the closeup view, I'm thinking abrasion of some sort.

It does appear show inside the O as much as in any other low points if you see the original picture at higher resolution.
Coin is still for auction but no other bids.........

It also had a minimum bid around twice the value or so.
the lines are too orderly (unidirectional), concentrated on high points, corresponding Obv & Rev and consistent IMHO to be considered the woodgrain effect. Note how the sinister wheat stalk high points are bantered but inside in dark brown? In fact I don't see a protected low point that exhibits the effect around the abraded high points

I think the woodgrain is plainly evident as seen in the excellent images. The piece has been compromised, however, by one who thought he could improve it by removing the woodgrain, hence the abrasions (scratches). The OP agrees with me.

Really, a nice piece before it got worked on by someone who doesn't know what they are doing. Deserves a details grade, in my opinion.

The cent had an opening bid of $85 on it so needles to say it didn't sell. Wonder if it will be back in another auction?

What I do know about this coin... if I had bought it based on the label, I would have been greatly disappointed when i received it and would be trying to send back.
It doesn’t look like woodgrain to me. It looks like either die lines or an abrasion.
