1881 IHC error or anomaly? Opinions appreciated

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,175 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am trying to grasp the possibilities of this 1881 IHC with an interesting raised metal blob between the U and the 1 of the date. It is raised and not incuse so it is not struck thru. Any ideas? Maybe a damaged die? I am 100% sure it is raised metal! That is the extent of my analysis! The coin is graded NGC MS64BN. I'd appreciate some other thoughts on it.

Die chip, interesting and near the date so it shows up well.

It’s not in Rick Snow’s book nor Poloquin’s (sp) research. If it is a die gouge which I suspected it was, maybe I should send it to Rick for attribution? What do you IHC guy’s think?

We used to call this an “occluded gas bubble’ ( back in the 60’s/70’s)

If it pops, it’s a nice lamination
