Buy the holder, not the coin. CAC Gold AU58 Steel Cent brings silly money.

Thought this was an interesting auction. I had always wondered if there were any AU58 CAC Gold coins out there which I guess means this coin is UNC. But even in MS67 is a price guide of $200. Maybe collecting AU58 Gold CAC holders is a thing?

everyman's?
Would not matter as neither the PCGS or NGC registry can currently "see" or add points for the CAC bean, could not even be added to a PCGS CAC only registry set currently. There are very few gold bean Lincoln cents in total and this might be the only AU58, that is what drove the price.

More money than sense?
Gold CACs that are not late date buffs or mercs generally bring at least $400 regardless of the coin.
p58's are plentiful?
There are currently 105 AU 58s of the 1943 (P) cent in the PCGS population.
Yes they go crazy over the gold stickers don’t they?
Die Crack rim into head. Is there a split serif on the top left of the 1? There is a DDO in the cherrypickers guide, but it has "extremely thick letters and very thick digits", which i can't see.

The buyer is going to crack it out and resubmit in hopes it’s a 62. 😁
They bought the sticker not the holder.
As U1 posted there are many AU58's for this particular date/mm, in addition to the PCGS census NGC shows 62 in AU58 for 1943 cents. I checked the CAC census and there are only 8 stickered AU58 1943 cents and as I suspected this is the only gold stickered coin in AU58 for 1943. In fact in the entire Lincoln cent series CAC has only awarded 4 gold beans out of the 1,100 AU58's that have been reviewed and awarded a sticker by CAC. A true condition rarity for those that are motivated to collect gold bean coins.

It’s worth noting that the CAC and MyCollect registries do add points for the bean, although I’m not disputing your reason(s) for the hammer price of this particular coin.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
They bought it for clout.

You are correct, and I suspect that this coin might be highly prized by one of the CAC Collectors Cabinet sets, the equivalent of the PCGS everyman set capped at AU58.

People always seem to pay multiples of guide for a gold sticker, even for the next grade up. I’ll never understand why.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
To each their own, but not this guy. Ever. It's still an AU58.
Agreed, to each their own. I don't quite get it...
Amazing big spenders on those lol - I go by the grade on the holder. If they think it sb higher go get that grade then. Otherwise take a flying leap.
A $10 coin went for $501 lol what a screwball situation.
There is something about the novelty and rarity of a coin that PCGS deemed to be circulated and JA disagrees about.
In this case it's probably even more rare because the coin itself is worth less than $10.
