Wheat cents.

The other day my brother texted me saying he has a bucket of wheat cents. He was wondering if they are worth anything or should he just roll them up and take them to the bank. I told him I'll buy them off him. I got the coins and on a cold cloudy Sunday afternoon my wife and I separated the coins into pre-1940, "S" mint, and other wheat cents. Of the 2620 coins in the bucket 150 were pre-1940 and 150 were "S" mint coins. The most valuable coin was a 1924 in EF or so, although it's probably only worth $1-2. The most interesting for me was a very worn 1944 cent. At first I could have sworn the coin was from the teens. I have never seen such a worn wheat cent from the 40s.

Now to figure out what to do with 2620 wheat cents.

What a fun project. I'd bucket up a bunch of the "S" mints and offer them on eBay as a lot.
I'd do the same for the pre-1940 coins.

Your 1924 cent looks more AU than XF and thus has a closer evaluation of $15. or so, I'd think.

I'd also add, PCGS has graded a single 1944 cent as a GD04, none lower.
Perhaps if you have a submission going in anyway sometime in the future, toss in your 1944. It appears FA02 and would command a bit of a premium to a lowball collector.

What kind of a premium can one get for average circulated S-mint wheats from 1940 to 1955? I have at least 10 rolls of them.

Also, it there any premium for 1960-D small date cents in average circulated (XF- AU) coins?

PO1 or FA2 Wheat cents from the 40s and 50s are somewhat difficult to obtain in problem free condition.
    Most are VF or better.

There are also collectors who value "S" mint early Lincolns and pay a premium for them- especially if they are unsearched (so to speak).

Love that '24. That date doesn't come that nice out of wheat cent lots.
At one time, I was sitting on 130,000 cents, 26 bags, all searched. You do know there's no such thing as an 'unsearched' wheat lot. When you see that term connected to a wheat cent sale, run.....It usually means, "Unsearched....By my mother-in-law"
You'll get rid of the rest, they sell well......

What fun. I love coins like the 44-P. Where has it been? What has it seen? Who held it? Why is it so worn? I'd of kept it off to the side too.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

These stories are great. Very exciting to go through old stashes. Recently went into my old hoard and to my horror the verdigris has crept in. Instead of spending time doing various dips and soaks, I'm thinking of just selling the tainted hoard and letting someone else worry about that.

Actually they wholesale at more than 4 cents in quantity. Bags of wheats retail at $250ish

My local dealer pays 3 cent apiece for wheat cents. On eBay bulk lots of 1,000 can sell for 4-7 cents each.

One can feel richer if the terminology is used thusly: Wheat's are tripled or even quadrupled in value of face.😀

I received another text from my brother. He said he found another group of wheats about double in size the first group.
