Is card collecting dead?

Where do you guys think card collecting will be in 10-20 years? What do you guys think about cards conditions? Older cards weren't really meant to be kept in good condition compared to todays cards.

Give me your thoughts.

  • I'd say cards will be selling for 5-10% of BV in 20 years, 1% on Ebay. image

    Take these into consideration:

    1. Cards use to sell for overbook in the early to mid 80's. Then somewhat near book in the early 90's. Then 1/2 book in the mid to later 90's. Now 33% on an average.

    2. Companies are running out of ideas.

    3. Too many different products which spreads out the demand which reduces prices people are willing to pay. If a player has 25 rookie cards, then collectors have options vs. when they had 2-3 back in the early 80's and before.
  • Do you think autographs or vintage cards will hold value? What about a jordan rc?

yes. Autographs and vintage is the way to go. But when it comes to autographs, commons are starting to flood the market with those now with the "Cuts". First UD with Legendary Cuts and now Fleer's Classic Cuts. So, autographs can come from letters, index cards, notes, etc. and inserted into a card. But that will run out, so I think in 20 years, the vintage autos and vintage cards will hold value if in good shape.

The internet has killed book values, plain and simple. Ebay...great for the buyer but bad for the seller

  • Thats right dirtmonkey, but remember...just because beckett becomes obsolete doesn't mean card collecting dies. The Market will slowly adjust.

Ebay makes it easier to complete sets though. The large amount of different products ran majority of the set builders off. So, Ebay is a good place to find those cards you need for sets and has brought back a few set builders.

That's true. It will run off those people who think prices in Beckett is written in stone. But the hobbyist and collectors will still be around.
  • That is why I've been skeptical about selling on Ebay because I see what some of these cards are going for and I know that I can't afford to sell mine at that price and make a profit. If you figure an average pack now cost about $4.00. If the odds in finding a GU are 1:18 w/ 18 packs per box and I buy 5 packs. I beat the odds and get a GU, a common #'d RC, and an insert #'d to 1000. The GU will only sell for maybe 5.00, the RC for 2.00, and the insert for 1.00. After all that I'm still in the whole 12.00. Then maybe I sell a lot of the base cards and I make another 4.00. I'm still down 8.00. That's how I look at it.
I'm looking for anything Yanks, any baseball autos, and much much more on my site. Thanks.

It's definitely not dead. Card collecting is not just trading...it's trading, buying, etc. Look at the millions of people who collect cards...I don't think it'll ever be dead.
