Hopefully he gets in the HOF!!! Right now I doubt he cares if he is in Heaven he is at peace no matter what. Hope he is and having a blast playing baseball with the other passed away MLB players.
In 50-100 years from now no one will care he bet on baseball they will just see his stats and go WOW!!! Same way I could careless about Shoeless Joe and what he supposedly did 100 years ago I only look at his stats and he should be in the HOF as well.
In reinstating Rose, Manfred also reinstated the following individuals who have passed away while on the permanently ineligible list, including: Eddie Cicotte, Happy Felsch, Chick Gandil, Joe Jackson, Fred McMullin, Swede Risberg, Buck Weaver, Lefty Williams, Joe Gedeon, Gene Paulette, Benny Kauff, Lee Magee, Phil Douglas, Cozy Dolan, Jimmy O’Connell and William Cox.
I dont understand why rose/jackson etc dont go on the regular ballot now that they are reinstated. It sounds like the HOF is going to put them on committee for vote.

Joe doesn't qualify since he was on the ballot twice already and got about 1% of the vote each time. Not sure why Pete can't be.

I didnt realize joe had already been on the ballot. good point.
I am sure this is the HOF's way to put up a barrier to entry for Pete. I think it is more likely he would get voted in rather by the writers than by committee.
I understand why people do not like Pete Rose the man, but Pete Rose the player deserves enshrinement.
sure, he was a dirt bag. big time. but there are lots of dirt bags already in.
HALL OF FAME ELECTION REQUIREMENTS
BBWAA rule 5:
Voting — Voting shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.
Source...Yahoo Sports Rose acknowledged he had a sexual relationship with the woman in court documents made public Monday, but he said his information and belief was that it started when she was 16. He was 34, married and the father of two children in 1975, when he says he began having sex with the woman, referred to in the filing as “Jane Doe.” Rose said he does not recall how long the relationship lasted.
The woman’s account does not raise the prospect of a criminal charge for Rose, as it is well past Ohio’s statute of limitations. She said they also had sex outside of Ohio when she was 16 or younger, but didn’t specify the states, and Rose said their sexual relationship was confined to Ohio. In some states, such as Florida, the legal age of consent is 18.
Rose clearly failed MISERABLY under not only the BBWAA rule 5, but his insane hubris was epic. I don't care if he got 10,000 hits, or 10,000 home runs. He is, was and will always be nothing short of a dirt bag loser. One of his classic comments was “It don't bother me but you know Johnny Bench is one guy who should thank God I was born,” Rose told host Brian Kilmeade. “Because he never would have made the Hall of Fame if I wasn't born.”
IMO, the HOF is nothing short of a total farce. Unquestionable that there are drug users, and rule breakers who simply never got caught who are in the HOF. Honoring Rose does nothing but further dilute this "good ole boys" club.

I think we all know the "integrity" and "character" aspects of the HOF criteria are there as symbols only. that is proven out by the sportswriter voting record over the years. that can go for "sportsmanship" as well.
in effect, the HOF is the Hall of Stats. there are oodles of dirtbags, creeps and neer-do-wells enshrined, and they have been since the beginning. it would be a small hall indeed if all the creeps, racists and cheaters were kicked out. Probably only have Christy Mathewson as the only member.
when I look at players, their personal lives do not factor into my opinions or comparisons of their baseball careers. It just doesnt interest me. at all. I think the same can be said of most voters as well. there are some exceptions (curt schilling) but it seems in todays day and age, having the "wrong" political views is about the worst offense a person can have.

Symbols only? Really? So I guess in your book anything goes...rape, incest, sex with underage girls, lying, crack, selling drugs.
Just hit that baseball, right?? Then they should all get in. What exact proof do you have that the BBWAA record shows this over the years?

well... racists such as Cap Anson, Landis, Yawkee, tris speaker,
rogers hornsby and gaylord perry were admitted cheaters. Drysdale, ford and certainly others were known cheaters.
Cobb entered the stands and attacked a heckling fan and he had gambling allegations in the late 1920s. Ruth, mantle were both known womanizers, and Ruth also attacked heckling fans. I recall that there is video evidence of Pedro Martinez attending cock fighting events.
these are just a few off the top of my head. none of these folks would pass the "integrity" or "character" clauses.
believe me, there were tons of racist HOFers playing, even past integration. I dont think anyone considers racists of high "integrity" or "character"

So, sex with a minor is no big deal to you? You don't think this doesn't fit into the integrity and character portion of rule 5?
I guess anything goes with you, just "let's play ball". Sad!!

No. I never said that. you did. nice strawman you have built. those things do not factor into my player evaluations. they clearly do not factor into voters evaluations either. look at the dirtbags I listed above.
when I evaluate players for the HOF, I only use their BASEBALL record. I do not factor in non baseball factors.
do i think rose was a dirtbag? of course. as a baseball player, he deserves the HOF. he is not up for canonization here. I am fully capable of compartmentalizing. apparently you are not.
by the way, we already have one HOFer on the banned/ineligible list: roberto alomar.
Trevor Bauer should sue the league. The guy was proven innocent, and even worse, he had his reputation destroyed by a blatantly false accusation money grab. The league in turn pull a Kaepernick and colludes to keep him out of the league.

The league used it as an excuse to get rid of him because of how critical he was of the dumb rule changes. He did nothing wrong other than call out Manfred. Hes obviously blackballed when hes offered to play for league minimum. He will never pitch in MLB again but hes making good money in Japan and his social media stuff and its just not worth his time or money trying to sue when Tony Clarke the MLBPA leader cares more about keeping MLB happy then helping the players
Jackson definitely gets in. Not debatable. That was a travesty of justice. This should have been corrected a long time ago.
Rose received a lifetime ban, and it turns out that's exactly what he got. Since he is deceased, and time has passed, seems like many are looking at this situation differently. So he will likely get in.
It’s funny how the “ethics” clause can be used to suit the whims of fans and voters to keep some players out but it’s ignored conveniently for others. It is also clear that ethical standards change through the years. What was acceptable 40 years ago is repulsive today. If racism were considered there aren’t too many players from before the 1950’s who would pass the litmus test. But things were different then.
It makes it nearly impossible to judge all players over all eras equally. That what makes the argument by @craig44 so compelling: forget about integrity and character, focus on stats and what happened on the field.
