Got my 1st Heritage set (71)! Anyone here like having original+Heritage as matching pair?

So as many of you know, my main dream/project/quest is to do the 1971 (and 1972 to a slightly lesser extent) set...and I finally at long last got those unclaimed property checks I've been waiting for over the past year. While most of it is indeed going towards paying off what I owe, I found the 2020 (1971) Heritage set for a good price and I was always curious how well it'd match up with the originals and sure enough I think they match up great together! As for which one I want next, it's a toss up between 2024 (1975) or 2021 (1972)...of course I'll eventually want 2022 (1973) and 2023 (1974) eventually as nobody wants a run/sequence with a two year gap! My favorite inserts are the Baseball and News Flashbacks and I hope they remember to include them this year in the High Number set...it's interesting how that works; instead of a split in half series 1 and series 2 it's more like series 2/3 and series 1/3!

I know I've often lamented how I found the Heritage sets interesting but was worried about how expensive they were ($400-$500 per year if you count SPs and regular inserts; and yes my 2020 Heritage set includes them) and I guess I also had a wait and see approach to see if Topps would continue them into the 70s (remember back around 2008 or so when I whined "I can't wait that long!" regarding the 1975 Heritage set?). But there's no law saying I HAVE to have all of them and I think having the ones from the 70s is a realistic goal if I'm patient about it, right? But boy howdy where does the time go...Heritage is now on its 25th anniversary already and now I can in fact have the Hertiage set to go with my originals as a side by side matching pair! You guys know how much I love the colorful 75's and I think 1976 is a nice colorful set too.

I do have a few other questions I'm curious about:

  1. Who here is the biggest Heritage set fan? It'd be quite a project/task but has anyone here at least come close to having all the sets (regular+SP's+regular insert sets)
  2. Does Topps try to match the photography style that was used in that year's original set, if that makes sense?
  3. You know those stamped originals they insert? About how many of each of those are out there?

  • Hi, I collected the original release in 2001 pretty heavily. I believe the did try to match the 1952 style and the higher series were SPs. I remember cal ripken being tough. I still have a lot of unopened wax

Well of course they'd do that for 1952, silly! I mean more recently for the 70s Heritage...it's great that I actually have a modern set I can collect and maybe finally get to know players from the 21st century!

I have never seen anything about stamped buyback numbers from Heritage. I would bet Topps didn't even bother to keep track. Buy some bulk cards, stamp them and stick them in packs.

I pretty much only collect Garvey buybacks and have not seen a ton over the years and sadly, missed many of them to other buyers.

I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

I am a Heritage fan, but likely not the biggest fan here. I like to think I have a complete set of each year, just in unopened form 😎

Topps uses more portrait pictures in Heritage than the original sets in my opinion. They could do a better job of expanding action shots.

Each year they produce about 8500-9000 hobby cases, based on stated insert pack odds. I have pulled about 3 buyback cards per case, which would put set count around 35-40 buybacks of each card. I suspect they use mostly commons and not complete sets, since I rarely see stars or key RCs with buyback stamps. Hope this helps.

I was just curious...so apparently since 2015 they settled on 725 card set (counting SPs) and apparently the High Number series has more regular insert sets? My guess is to give the High Number series an extra benefit as otherwise they might be overlooked more. And according to baseballcardpedia even the regular non-SP cards were only made a little over 100K copies each? That's awfully limited edition for what I'm presuming is Topps' second most popular set?

So I managed to save up enough Ebay gift cards I earned from a couple of survey/play games for money websites and put it towards this:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/127073143561

He seems like a good go-to guy for getting my Heritage sets! Naturally I hope to get this one next:

Again it is really exciting that Heritage has finally gotten to the point where I can get them to go with my original sets! Like I said, I think they do make an amazing matching pair! Sure I could never afford to have all the Heritage sets but I think I can manage having at least the 70s ones!
