Nolan Ryan RC PSAs

I'm new to this forum, and don't want to appear inappropriate in any way, but does anyone have any idea how many PSA 9, PSA 8 or in fact, PSA 10 Nolan Ryan Topps #168 RCs are out there? Looking to greatly enhance my collection in the future, and am trying to get a handle on the situation.

Any info would be much appreciated. This would include possible BGS or BVGS numbers as well.

    Ryan:

The Ryan rookie is probably the most important regular issue post-war baseball rookie card that has not gotten a PSA 10 grade. It is pure speculation what one would even sell for if one was ever graded (though I know at least three people who would easily throw in $25k)

As for BGS/BVG examples, I would be wary of trimmed examples. I think there are a few 9's. Their population report is available free from their website, so I would suggest looking into that.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • Thanks guys for the info. I was pretty sure myself that there wasn't a PSA 10 Ryan RC out there, or else I would have heard of it. Wasn't aware of the BGS/BVGS trimming issue, so good to know.

Any idea what some of those PSA 9s have sold for? For some reason $3,000 to $4,000 comes to mind, but maybe I'm way off.

I was thinking of subscribing to the population report, but this was the only card I was really interested in finding out.

    Thanks again.
  • You'd think as relatively easy, as compared to other issues, it is to locate nice examples of 1968 cards, that there would be at least one Ryan rookie graded 10. A while ago, I thought I heard something about an SGC 98 of that card. Is there population report still free also? I'll go check it out.

I'm fairly convinced that if someone has fifty PSA 9s of a single card -- cracked them all and submitted them, that there is a large chance that one of them would come back as a PSA 10. (As well as getting a few 8's back...)

Not that I would recommend doing this with a Nolan Ryan RC graded PSA 9. But this is something I was going to experiment with probably sometime during the next grading special (obviously with less expensive cards). But I have and have seen enough 9s and 10s to not be able to predict with much better than 70% certainty which ones are which (with centering and back corners being the leading indicators). I've seen way too many 10s with problems on their edges...

Anyway, I don't think any Nolan Ryan rookie has graded higher than SGC 88. Actually, I think there is one SGC 92 -- but that's it.

  • Mike,

Just checked their pop report. Nothing higher than 92, and there is only one of those. I guess my memory is failing me in my old age image.
