    Hello and welcome. Unfortunately your coin is a modern counterfeit, which means that it is worth nothing. :/

    Yes, as IkesT stated it's a fake. The whole coin market is flooded with Chinese made counterfeits. The grainy surfaces are the first giveaway.

    Two sure signs of it being a counterfeit, the mint mark is in the wrong location
    and the die chip on the left wheat stalk which is used on several different years.

    Also, the mint mark is the wrong size and style.

  • Darn I was kind of hoping to get more comments either agreeing with what has been said, or another point of view. I'll wait a couple of more days to see if anyone else would like to comment. Thanks

    How many comments are you looking for?
    You have 4 experienced people telling you that it is a counterfeit. You said you wanted a few and that is what you got. Probably others aren't commenting because you already have your answer. Have seen that Chinese made counterfeit many times.
    Now how about the story behind the coin.

  • Thank you all so much for your in put. In order not to prejudice anyone, I wanted to wait before I explain my humiliating story behind this coin. I have been collecting coins off and on for several years now, but by all means, I’m still learning. Before my post, I was already 99.9% sure I fell pray to one of the most obvious “burns” by buying this coin off ebay! I’m really embarrassed to admit this, but I really screwed up when I failed to pay attention to the most obvious red flags; Seller was in China, 4 other buyers left feedback also making claims of this seller selling counterfeit coins to them.. etc. It couldn’t have been more obvious. I should tattoo the word “stupid” on my forehead! I know it’s no excuse, but I was up late on the computer, very tired and just jumped into it like a fool. Days later when I went to check the tracking status I felt sick to learn the seller was in China and saw other feedback about selling fake coins to others. So I gathered screen shots of seller profile, feedback and original listing not indicating “replica”, and even tried to contact seller twice but got no reply. When the coin finally arrived and I took one look at it, I immediately went on ebay to contact seller and guess what? “Seller no longer a registered ebay user”. I paid using PayPal, and can only hope the buyer protection program will work for me. I'm waiting to hear back from PP. But I’m afraid PP is going to ask me “how do you know it’s counterfeit?” And not being that knowledgeable and have zero credentials, I wasn’t sure of all the tell tale signs I may be overlooking, other than the obvious lettering in “GOD” and the misplaced, strange looking, mint mark. I won’t be too happy if PP expects me to burn more money by telling me I have to get an outside professional service to authenticate it! That would cost me more than I paid. Then there’s the worry; will they will require me to mail it back to them or to seller, and I know that it’s considered mail fraud and is a federal offense to do so. Any suggestions? P.s. I apologize if this post is a duplicate of a zillion other prior posts left by other newbie air-heads that you long time members are sick of seeing!

    I have never gone the PayPal route.

    My first step in a case like this would be to request a return on eBay. From the return options, I would select "Doesn't match description or photos". I would write a brief message saying that I'm returning the coin because it is a counterfeit and also upload photos of the item. eBay usually rules in favor of the buyer in these types of cases; you don't need to supply proof or expert testimony that the coin is a counterfeit. The fact that the seller is no longer a registered user is also very much in your favor. If eBay instructs you to send the item back to the seller, do so, using the free shipping label they provide.

    I've had several similar cases that justified a return and eBay always ruled in my favor - I never had to appeal anything to PayPal.

    Sorry to hear about your experience, hope it wasn’t too costly a lesson.
    If PP ask for proof that it is counterfeit, you can always refer them to this listing. As IkesT suggested, your best course is to make a claim through eBay. The fact that the profile reads “ seller no, longer a registered ebay user” means that eBay has removed the account, in this case probably for selling counterfeit coins.

    Glad that it worked out for you. A lesson learned that did not cost you anything.

  • Glad you got a refund! The 1914-D is a "Key Date" in the Lincoln Cent (Wheat Reverse) Series. In the highest graded Condition (MS-66+) this Coin has sold north of $150,000 at auction! When that kind and of value is potentially involved, Counterfeits are going to be abundant so it's advised to go through a reputable source or at least have it checked out by a reputable source.

    @wbird2

    Lesson learned that you CANNOT buy rare coins RAW not certified by TPG at way below market prices..

    What price did you pay and wonder why the price was so low in comparison to the current value?
