Why Do Some eBay Sellers Not Use Tracking

For me it’s most beneficial to know when a coin is going to arrive

Now with the eBay standard envelope the cheaper small items can be tracked for less than $1 (the tracking can be off by a day for this service but it still gives one a good idea). There are some people that do not print a label on eBay and instead go to the post office. There could be tracking but they forget or don't know to upload it. There are also a handful of people that have accumulated a lot of stamps and will stick those on the package and not purchase tracking. Still it's rare for there to be no tracking in my experience.

That explains the situation with the few small items I sell - discount postage.

  • I made a mistake a few years back and forgot to add tracking through USPS. The buyer filed a did not receive item case on me. Only cost me about 40.00, but lesson learned.

Tracking covers you in case of a devious buyer.

It’s very disturbing if seller does not use tracking. Some items take longer in transit than others. Or seller could be incompetent or a crook. Frankly if seller does not use tracking - I make note, avoid them in future. Shipments I use tracking on everything. I like to track / know what’s going on with items in transit.

It's probably worth stepping up some parcels to Ground Advantage rather than going the ebay standard, much better tracking.

They do not get tracking because of cost. With eBay and USPS cut into sale price, many items get sold for less than wholesale.

Where do you get the 'ebay standard envelopes'? I brought a business envelope to the usps and asked for tracking. The clerk charged me over $5 to track it. I suspect I don't have the secret password so usps see's a big invisible L on my forehead. haha

You have to print the label from eBay. This is not something done at the post office.
It’s available on certain categories (coins included) and has to be for sales under a certain dollar amount ($20 last I checked).

Edit: here is an eBay page about it

If you use eBay standard envelopes, expect some neutrals, negatives, and non-delivery claims. The people that buy low valued stuff are frequently new ebayers and expect alot. The tracking for eBay standard envelopes is also not consistent. It shows at major hubs, but not all the movement, sometimes even if delivered.

If the purchase is small, tracking is an expensive luxury. I am in the midst of looking at Walking Liberty Half Dollars in the mid 1930s, and purchased a 1935 (P) and 1937 (P) this past week in PCGS and MS-65. Tracking was provided and was accurate, and at a few hundred dollars each that is nice to have. For a small order, I am fine without tracking.

I ship 1000 eBay standard envelopes per year. I have never gotten a neutral or a negative for one. There are occasional non- delivery claims, one or two per year. Who cares? They are always inexpensive items.

What method of shipping? Tracking at USPS for domestic shipping had no added charge for packages or eBay standard.

Yes. It's $20 per item and less than $50 per package

    Cheap items -

In terms of pricing many (coin club poll) just mark them up accordingly cost plus with a tackon covering shipping cost. Harry sells a lot from his show junk boxes < $20 coins in 2x2 that way.
